ALR screens use optical layering to reject off-axis light while preserving on-axis contrast. They are not a marketing trick. on a well-specified site they recover two to three stops of contrast.
  • Daylight viewing. No projector competes with direct sun. An outdoor LED video wall is the only display technology that performs in full daylight. LED walls operate at 1,500 to 5,000 nits, which is comparable to or brighter than direct sunlight on a panel surface. They are significantly more expensive per square foot of image area than projection, but they are the only answer if the use case includes afternoon viewing.

Weather: Ratings, Cabling, and Protection Plans

Weather is the second variable and the one that most residential outdoor theater systems get wrong. The Northeast delivers temperature swings from below 10 degrees Fahrenheit in a Bergen County January to above 95 degrees on a Hamptons afternoon in July, plus humidity, salt air on coastal sites, and UV exposure on any surface that faces south or west.

  • Displays. Outdoor-rated televisions from Seura, Samsung Terrace, and SunBriteTV are engineered for these conditions.   • Cabling. All cabling in outdoor environments is weather-rated for the installation method: direct burial, conduit, or overhead. Connectors are weatherproofed at the termination point. We do not use indoor cable in outdoor runs regardless of whether it is in conduit. conduit fills with moisture in the Northeast and indoor cable jackets degrade.
  • Amplification and signal processing. Outdoor amplifiers go in ventilated, weatherproof enclosures rated for the installation environment. Equipment that is not rated for outdoor use goes in a climate-controlled equipment room or pool house, with properly rated signal runs to the outdoor zone.
  • Projectors and screens. Where a projector is part of the design, it goes under permanent cover or in a motorized enclosure that closes on a schedule or at the press of a button. Motorized screen retraction is standard for any exposed screen installation. The Crestron system can be programmed to retract screens and cover projectors automatically based on weather triggers.

Acoustics: Open-Space Dispersion and Landscape Speaker Design

Indoor rooms contain sound. Outdoor spaces do not.
