In Plain English: Distributed AV is the layer that lets any source play in any room. without a separate remote, without a separate app, without a separate sub for every space. The kitchen, the patio, the gym, the primary suite, and the great room can all run independently or in sync. We engineer that.
What “Distributed” Actually Means
In a distributed system the sources live in one place. an equipment rack. and the audio and video they produce is routed over a structured backbone (HDBaseT, AV-over-IP, or matrix-switched coax depending on the project) to the rooms that ask for it. The kitchen does not need its own streaming box. The patio does not need its own subwoofer rack. Each zone is a tap into a clean, central source pool.
Done correctly that means: every room can play any source at any time. The volume and source choice in the bedroom does not affect the great room. Outdoor zones run independently of indoor zones. Party mode syncs the whole house. The wife’s yoga playlist in the gym does not steal from the kid’s game on the family room TV.
Audio: What We Spec and Why
- In-ceiling architectural speakers. Sonance Visual Performance, Origin Acoustics Director, James Loudspeaker. Selected by room volume, ceiling height, finish, and listening intent. not by lowest bid.
- Invisible and plaster-flush speakers. Sonance Invisible Series, Stealth Acoustics, James Loudspeaker SPL flush. For rooms where the design language does not allow visible grilles.
- Outdoor speakers. Origin Acoustics, James, MSE Audio Soundtube and Garden Series. Engineered for landscapes. landscape arrays, satellite-and-sub systems, or stealth burial subs.
- In-wall LCRs. Where a media room or bonus room is going to do real work but does not warrant a dedicated theater build.
- Subwoofers. Real subs in the right rooms. Outdoor subs in the right landscapes. Not an afterthought. designed in.
Video: How We Distribute It
Video distribution is more demanding than audio. 4K HDR at 60Hz with HDR metadata, 4:4:4 chroma, and Dolby Vision pass-through is a real signal. copy-protected, bandwidth-hungry, and intolerant of bad cabling. We typically run one of three architectures:
- HDBaseT matrix. 4K 18Gbps over Cat6A. Reliable, cost-effective, the right answer for most homes up to 8 to 16 zones.
- AV over IP. Encoder/decoder pairs over a managed 10Gb network. Scales without limits, supports tiling and multi-view, used for large estates and commercial.
- Direct, room-by-room. Sometimes the cleanest answer is a high-end source in each room with a control overlay. especially in retrofits where the cabling does not exist.
Sources include Apple TV, cable boxes, Kaleidescape, dedicated streaming, and direct HDMI inputs for game consoles or laptops. Destinations include every TV, projector, and display in the house. The control system handles routing. the homeowner picks a source on a touchpanel and the system handles the rest.
The Rack Is the System
Whatever the topology, the rack is where the system lives. We assemble racks on the bench, test them before they ship, label every connection, and document the build. Power conditioning, ventilation, network connectivity, and remote access are designed in, not added later. A clean rack is what makes the system supportable for the next decade.
How It Comes Together
Distributed AV is rarely a standalone scope. It is part of a larger automation project that includes lighting, networks, climate, and theater. We design it alongside everything else, run cabling at pre-wire alongside everything else, and commission it as a coherent system. not as a pile of independent products that happen to live in the same house.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need a centralized AV rack, or are streaming TVs enough?
It depends on scope. For a single TV or a small home, smart TVs and streaming sticks are fine. For luxury estates with multiple zones, outdoor AV, theater, and cohesive control, a centralized rack is the only way to get the system to behave like a single coherent house. The walkthrough is the right place to figure out which side of the line you are on.
Can I have invisible speakers everywhere?
Yes, and we install them often. Sonance Invisible Series and Stealth Acoustics in particular. They are not free; they typically cost more than visible architectural speakers and require some build planning. The result, in the right rooms, is sound that appears from nowhere.
What about Sonos? Why not just use that?
Sonos is a fine consumer system. we install it where it is the right fit. For estate-tier projects we typically lead with engineered architectural systems with proper amplification and zone matrixing because they integrate more cleanly with whole-home control, support real subwoofers, and outperform Sonos in larger and outdoor zones. We are happy to lay out both options during the walkthrough.
How many sources can I run at once?
As many as the matrix supports. we typically design for at least one independent source per zone, plus shared sources like Apple TV, cable, and music streaming. Larger systems support 16 to 32 zones with full independent routing.
Can I integrate vinyl, hi-fi, and high-end stereo with the distributed system?
Yes. this is one of our favorite scopes. A high-end stereo or hi-fi room can sit on the rack as another source, available to the rest of the house, while still operating as a serious dedicated listening room with its own gear. The two are not in conflict.
Do you support outdoor AV?
Yes. Outdoor speaker arrays, satellite-and-buried-sub systems, weatherproof TVs, pool-side displays, and full landscape audio. Outdoor AV needs different engineering than indoor. coverage geometry, weather protection, and amplification all work differently. and we design it as its own scope inside the larger system.
