In Plain English: A real home theater is not a TV in a dark room with a couch. It is an acoustically designed space where the picture, the sound, the seating, and the lighting are all engineered together so that the experience disappears and the movie takes over. We build that. Two Distinct Categories
We build two related but separate things. Dedicated theaters are purpose-built rooms. light controlled, acoustically treated, with tiered seating, a screen or projection wall, dedicated subwoofers, and a calibrated immersive audio layout. Media rooms are multi-purpose spaces. family rooms, lofts, basement lounges. that do double duty as social spaces and great viewing spaces. The engineering is similar; the constraints are different. The walkthrough is the right place to figure out which one your house actually wants.
What Goes Into a Dedicated Theater
- Room geometry and acoustics. Dimensions, reflections, modes, isolation. We will work with the architect early when we can. the room is the first piece of equipment.
- Acoustic treatment. Absorption, diffusion, bass traps. Hidden behind fabric panels or built into millwork. The room is engineered to be neutral.
- Display. 4K or 8K laser projection on a calibrated acoustically transparent screen, or a high-end direct-view display where projection is not the right answer.
- Immersive audio. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X layouts. typical configurations are 7.2.4, 9.2.6, or larger. Properly placed, properly calibrated.
- Subwoofers. Multiple subs, spatially distributed, with measurement-driven placement and EQ. The bass response is engineered, not hoped for.
- Seating. Tiered platforms, motorized recliners, integrated cup holders and ambient seat lighting. We coordinate with the seating manufacturer to get heights and rake right.
- Lighting. Sconces, step lights, ambient fills. all on the automation system, all scene-driven. Lights at “movie” are not the same as lights at “intermission.”
- Control. One-touch “Movie” scene that dims the lights, lowers the screen, fires the projector, switches the source, and sets volume. Reversed by one tap when it is over.
What Goes Into a Media Room
Media rooms are typically family rooms, great rooms, lofts, or finished basements that get used for gaming, sports, movies, and casual viewing. They are not meant to be acoustically perfect. they are meant to be usable for many things, with great picture and sound when you want them. Real media rooms get:
- A large, color-calibrated direct-view display sized for the room and the seating distance.
- An audio layout matched to the room shape. in-ceiling Atmos heights, in-wall LCRs behind acoustically transparent paneling, real subwoofer integration.
- Lighting design that supports both the “watch” mode and the “hang out” mode without changing fixtures.
- A control scheme that does not require a coffee table covered in remotes.
Calibration Is Not Optional
Every theater and serious media room gets calibrated. Picture: white balance, gamma, color, peak luminance, HDR tone mapping, geometry. Audio: levels, distances, crossovers, room correction, subwoofer integration measured at the seating positions. Calibration is what separates a room with great gear in it from a room that actually performs. We do it ourselves; we do not outsource it.

What is the difference between a dedicated theater and a media room?
A dedicated theater is a single-purpose, acoustically engineered, light-controlled room with tiered seating and either projection or a high-end direct-view display. A media room is a multi-purpose space. family room, loft, basement. with great gear and great calibration but built to support more than just movie nights.
Do I need a projector or is a direct-view TV enough?
It depends on screen size, ambient light control, and viewing distance. For a true theater experience above 100 inches with a controlled-light room, modern 4K and 8K laser projection is unbeatable. For media rooms with windows or shorter throws, a high-end direct-view display is often the right call. We size and spec it during the walkthrough.
How big should the screen be?
Driven by seating distance and SMPTE viewing-angle guidelines. We calculate it from the room, not from a marketing chart. As a rule of thumb for serious viewing, the front-row seating is typically 1.2 to 1.6 times the screen width away from the screen.
Will the theater integrate with the rest of my house?
Yes. The theater is a scene on the same Crestron system that runs the rest of the house. Lights, shades, climate, and source selection are all coordinated. You do not pick up a separate remote when you walk into the theater.
What about Dolby Atmos and immersive audio?
Standard. We design layouts (7.2.4, 9.2.6, or larger) based on room geometry and seating, place speakers to spec, and calibrate to industry standards. Atmos done badly is worse than not having it; Atmos done correctly is the single biggest perceptual upgrade most theaters can make.
Can you fix a theater someone else built?
Often. The walkthrough is the right starting point. we look at what is there, identify what is fixable, and tell you what would need to change at the room level versus the equipment level. Sometimes a re-calibration solves 80 percent of complaints. Sometimes the room itself is the problem.
