The clients had dedicated a purpose-built room on the lower level of their Bergen County estate: 24 feet deep, 16 feet wide, with a ceiling height that allowed for proper overhead speaker placement. The bones were right. What we built into those bones took the better part of four months of planning before a single wire was pulled.

Acoustic design comes first. That is not a preference. it is physics. You cannot buy your way out of a poorly treated room with more expensive speakers. We engaged Grimani Systems early in the design phase, using their proprietary room modeling to determine bass trap placement, sidewall reflection points, and ceiling cloud dimensions before the walls were closed.
Room isolation was addressed at the construction phase. Double-layer drywall on resilient channels, Green Glue damping compound between layers, a floating floor system to break the structural path, and an independent HVAC branch with an in-line silencer. When that door closes, the outside world does not exist. Measured ambient noise floor in the completed room: under 25 dBA. That is quieter than most recording studios.
The System
The audio format is Dolby Atmos in a 7.4.4 configuration: seven surround channels, four subwoofers, four overhead speakers. Every driver in the room is Grimani Systems. an acoustics manufacturer that builds for professional screening rooms and applies the same engineering discipline to residential installations. The subwoofers are positioned using a multiple-sub array approach, which produces dramatically more even bass response across every seat rather than hot and dead spots that shift depending on where you sit.
Projection is a Sony VPL-GTZ380 4K laser projector, rated at 10,000 lumens and capable of hitting full DCI-P3 color volume. It throws onto a 144-inch Screen Innovations Black Diamond acoustically transparent screen. acoustically transparent because the three front speakers are mounted behind the screen surface in proper left-center-right positions, exactly as the format was designed to deliver. No sound bends around the screen edge. The image and audio originate from the same plane.

Control and Environment
Control runs through Crestron. A single “Movie” button on the in-room touchpanel dims the custom Lutron lighting to a calibrated 0.5 fc, lowers the motorized acoustical curtains along the sidewalls, powers the rack sequence in the correct order, selects the source, and engages the HVAC silencer mode. all within about eight seconds. There is no fumbling through inputs or adjusting the lighting separately. The ceiling is finished with a fiber optic starfield panel. approximately 400 points of light at varying intensities, creating a sky effect when the room is in movie mode. It sounds like a detail. In practice, it is what clients talk about for years afterward.
Seating is custom stadium-riser configuration, two rows of four. The riser was built into the room framing, not added as an afterthought. Sightlines were calculated before construction so every seat has an unobstructed view of the full screen width. That calculation takes about twenty minutes. Skipping it is a decision you live with indefinitely.
Calibration and Commissioning
Once the room was complete, we ran a full Dolby Atmos calibration using a reference measurement microphone at multiple seat positions. Parametric equalization was applied at the processor to correct for any remaining room-induced coloration. We set reference level, confirmed dynamic range across the full content bandwidth, and ran a structured listening evaluation before signing off.
