Most builders treat low-voltage as a commodity trade. The cable installer gets added to the bid list alongside the plumber and the painter. Selection criteria are price and availability, not expertise or design capability. The result is a company whose business model is running Cat6 and coax to a list of locations specified by the general contractor. a list that nobody with actual technology expertise reviewed.
Those locations are guesses. The rack room ends up in the mechanical space with no HVAC provision and no dedicated circuits. Speaker drops go where the framing happened to be convenient, not where acoustics require them. There is one network drop per room instead of three. The conduit to the rack room. if there is any conduit at all. terminates two feet short of where the panel actually needs to go. Technology Needs to Be Designed Before Framing
A properly integrated home requires technology planning to happen during architectural design, not after drywall. Speaker locations need to be coordinated with structural framing before any lumber goes up. That means reviewing architectural drawings, marking speaker locations, identifying rack room requirements, specifying conduit paths, and coordinating with the electrical engineer on dedicated AV circuits and panel locations. This is not a complex engagement. it takes a few hours of review and a set of marked drawings. But it needs to happen before framing, not after punch list.
Builders who engage technology partners early consistently produce better homes. The rack room is properly sized. The speaker drops land in the right positions.
