Motorized shades are similarly retrofit-friendly; most installations run on battery power or can be hardwired through existing circuits. Networking upgrades with a managed Wi-Fi system and a clean rack installation are nearly always doable regardless of the home’s age.
Audio is where retrofits get complicated. Distributed audio requires speaker wire, and speaker wire requires a path from a central rack to every room. In a home with accessible ceiling cavities or a finished basement below main living spaces, that path exists. In a three-story stucco home with no attic access and steel framing, it may not. or the cost to create it may not be justifiable for the result.

New construction is unambiguously the right time to build a technology infrastructure. During framing, every wire goes exactly where it needs to go. Conduit can be installed throughout. A proper rack location with adequate ventilation and power can be designed into the floor plan. Speaker locations are coordinated with the architect before drywall. Network drops go into every room.
