Home Runs vs. Daisy-Chain, and Why It Matters

Structured cabling, at its most basic, is the practice of running dedicated cable paths from every device location in a home back to a central distribution point. typically a network rack or equipment room. This is called a “home run” topology, and it stands in direct contrast to daisy-chaining, where devices are connected in series from one to the next.

The distinction isn’t just academic. A daisy-chained network is efficient to install but fragile to operate: one bad connection anywhere in the chain can take down every device downstream. Here is where structured cabling becomes more craft than construction. Every single run gets labeled at both ends before drywall closes. Not a generic tag that says “speaker” or “CAT6”. a specific, systematic label that tells you exactly what room, what location, and what device that run serves. We document every run in a spreadsheet: room, device type, cable type, run length, label ID. That document becomes the reference guide for every future service call, every upgrade, every troubleshooting session for the life of the house.

After the drywall is in and paint is complete, we return to terminate. Each cable gets punched down or terminated at the patch panel, dressed neatly in the rack, and every run gets tone-tested.
