Quick Answer: Shade motor wiring must be run before windows and millwork are installed. once the casings and sills are in place, access is extremely difficult. The rough-in requirement is a single conduit run from the shade pocket to the nearest junction point per motor. Motorized shades are one of the most requested features in luxury residential projects, and one of the most frequently compromised by construction sequencing. The conversation about shades happens with the interior designer, who selects the fabric. It happens with the window manufacturer, who specs the rough opening. It almost never happens with the AV integrator at the point in construction when it actually matters. which is before framing closes and well before drywall.
The result is a finished home where the shades work, but the power wire is visible along the window casing because there was no pathway inside the wall. Or, more expensively, where a finished wall gets opened to install a pathway that should have been roughed in during framing. Neither outcome is acceptable in a home built at this level.

Every motorized shade motor requires a power source at the window head. the horizontal framing member at the top of the window rough opening. For Lutron QS and Lutron Palladiom shading systems, the motor runs on low-voltage power delivered via Cat5e or Cat6 from a central power supply in the equipment room. For Crestron shading, the wiring varies by motor type but similarly requires a low-voltage conductor run to each window location before the wall is closed.
Some motors are battery-operated, which eliminates the wiring requirement but introduces a different trade-off: batteries need replacement on a schedule, and in a home with forty or sixty motorized windows and doors, that maintenance burden adds up quickly. Hard-wired systems are the correct answer for any serious installation, and hard-wired systems require the wire to be there before the wall closes.
The Window Installer Coordination Problem
In most luxury custom builds, the window installer works independently of the AV integrator. The window package is ordered, arrives on-site, and gets installed according to the framing schedule. Unless someone has specifically flagged which windows will have motorized shades, the window installer has no reason to coordinate on rough-in wiring. By the time the AV integrator walks the job, the windows are in, the framing is closed, and the moment for clean concealed wiring has passed.
The fix is simple in principle: the AV integrator needs to be involved in the project before the window package is ordered, and the shading locations need to be identified on the drawings before framing begins. A rough-in wire at each motorized window location is a minor framing-stage cost. The same wire added after drywall finishes is a repair project.
Coordinating with the Electrician
The electrician’s scope typically does not include low-voltage shading wire. That is the AV integrator’s work. But there is a coordination dependency: the power supply for a Lutron or Crestron shading system requires a dedicated 120V circuit in the equipment room. That circuit needs to be on the electrician’s rough-in plan, which means the AV integrator needs to provide load information to the electrician before rough-in begins.

The Timeline Builders Miss
The critical sequence for motorized shading infrastructure is: shading plan finalized during design, rough-in wire pulled during framing and before insulation, window rough openings confirmed against the shading plan before window install, and power supply circuit included in the electrical rough-in. None of these steps require significant additional cost if they happen in order. All of them become expensive if they happen out of order.
Builders who have worked with AV integrators on previous high-performance projects understand this sequence. Builders who have not tend to discover it after the fact. It is one of the primary reasons builders get technology wrong so consistently. not because they are careless, but because the right conversations are not happening at the right time in the project.
