The decision to cover a window is an architectural decision. It changes the proportion of a room, the quality of its light, the relationship between interior and exterior. In the great rooms, libraries, and south-facing entertaining spaces of Westchester estates, that decision carries particular weight. because the glazing itself was chosen with care, and what moves across it should reflect that same intention. For a Scarsdale estate, we integrated 28 motorized shade zones coordinated directly with the client's interior designer. The scope included Lutron Palladiom roller shades in primary living spaces, QS solar shades in the kitchen and breakfast room, and blackout shades in all bedrooms. Fabric selections were made in partnership with the design team, ensuring that each shade's opacity, texture, and color contributed to the room rather than interrupting it. Scene programming allows a single touchpad press. or a scheduled time event. to set every zone in the home to a position appropriate for morning light, afternoon work, evening entertaining, or overnight privacy.

Solar-Responsive Automation

The most sophisticated shading systems respond to the sun without requiring the occupant to think about it. Using astronomical time-clock programming integrated with the Lutron QS platform, shades can adjust throughout the day based on calculated sun position for the property's specific coordinates. A south-facing great room can be protected from the 2 p.m. glare load automatically, then open as the sun moves west, restoring the view at the moment it becomes pleasant again. These adjustments happen silently, in the background, and can always be overridden by a single touch.

Restrepo's integration of Lutron shading does not stop at the shade motors. The shading system is programmed as a fully coordinated layer within the home's overall automation environment. timed to complement lighting scenes, HVAC setpoints, and arrival/departure routines. A “good morning” scene can raise bedroom shades, adjust living room solar fabrics, and turn on kitchen lighting simultaneously. An “away” mode can close all shades to a neutral position that moderates solar heat gain and provides privacy.

The Design Collaboration

Interior designers working on Westchester estates bring considered specifications to every project, and Restrepo's role is to support and extend that work, not to override it. We engage early in the design process. before fabric selections are finalized and before pocket locations are framed. because the quality of a motorized shade installation depends entirely on decisions made during construction. Hem bar weight, headrail concealment, fascia integration, and pocket depth are all design conditions that must be resolved before drywall closes.
