What Sonos Does Well

Sonos has earned its place in the luxury residential market because it solves a genuinely difficult problem: delivering consistent, high-quality audio across every room in a home without requiring the occupant to think about it. The platform is inherently simple from the user's perspective and highly configurable from an integrator's perspective. which is exactly the combination that works in a luxury home.

The Sonos app gives household members direct access to every streaming service. Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon Music, Pandora, TuneIn, and more. and lets them group rooms, adjust volume, and set schedules without any special training. For homes where family members have different music preferences and different comfort levels with technology, Sonos handles both flawlessly.

Sound quality has improved substantially with the Era and Move 2 generations. Where early Sonos products were convenient but clearly consumer-grade, today's hardware sits at a level that satisfies even audiophile-adjacent clients in listening rooms and primary living spaces. particularly when paired with the right amplifiers and architectural speakers.

Why Restrepo Uses Sonos

We are deliberate about the technologies we specify. Sonos earns its place in our portfolio because it performs consistently in the field, receives reliable firmware updates, and has an integration API that we can program against in Crestron. In the 12-plus years we have been installing whole-home audio systems, the field call rate on Sonos installations is exceptionally low compared to competing platforms at the same price point.

The app is genuinely good. That matters in a home where the technology needs to be usable by everyone. the homeowner, their spouse, a college-age kid who is home for the summer, and a housekeeper. We have installed complex whole-home audio systems on platforms that required training to operate. Sonos does not. That is a real advantage when our goal is a system the household actually uses.

We recommend Sonos for projects where the audio priority is broad coverage, ease of use, and streaming flexibility. For projects where the priority is studio-grade multi-zone performance with dedicated source management and deeper Crestron programming depth, we may specify Autonomic instead. We will always recommend the right platform for your project. not the most convenient one for us.

Consistent Performance

Sonos hardware runs reliably after commissioning. Remote monitoring via Crestron means we can address most issues before a client notices them.

Broad Streaming Support

Every major streaming service, AirPlay 2, Bluetooth, line-in inputs, and local library playback. all in one unified app experience.

Scalable Architecture

Start with one room and expand to twenty without re-engineering the system. Sonos scales additively. new zones don't disrupt existing ones.

Crestron Integration

As an Elite Pro Crestron dealer, we program Sonos into Crestron control systems for unified one-touch operation alongside lighting, shading, and HVAC.

Whole-Home Audio Architecture

A properly designed Sonos whole-home audio system is more than placing speakers in rooms. We begin every project with a zone-by-zone audio plan that accounts for the acoustics of each space, the appropriate speaker type and placement, amplifier requirements, network topology, and integration touchpoints with the broader home automation system.

Wired vs. wireless deployment: In new construction and major renovations, we wire the home with in-wall and in-ceiling speakers driven by Sonos Amp units located in the equipment room. This gives you architectural-quality sound from speakers that disappear completely into the architecture, controlled by the Sonos platform. In existing homes where running wire is impractical, wireless Sonos speakers provide similar zone coverage without the construction impact.

Outdoor zones are a particular specialty. We specify weatherized outdoor speakers paired with Sonos Amp for pool areas, terraces, and covered patios, giving your outdoor spaces the same reliable audio experience as indoors. Grouping indoor and outdoor zones is a single tap in the Sonos app or a single button press on a Crestron touchpanel.

Network design matters. A Sonos system on a poorly designed network is a source of frustration. We design or review the home network as part of every installation, ensuring dedicated SSIDs, appropriate QoS settings, and sufficient wireless coverage. We partner with Araknis Networks and Ruckus for enterprise-grade home networking that keeps the audio system performing as designed.

Integration with Crestron, Lutron, Apple Home & Voice

Sonos works exceptionally well as a subsystem within a broader smart home architecture. As an Elite Pro Crestron Dealer, we program native Sonos control into Crestron processors using the Crestron Sonos driver. enabling your Crestron touchpanels, keypads, and remotes to control playback, volume, and zone grouping across the entire Sonos system. Press “Movie Night” and the lights dim, the shades close, and the music in the living room fades to a comfortable background level automatically.

Apple Home integration is native via AirPlay 2, which all current Sonos hardware supports. iPhone and iPad users can stream directly to any Sonos speaker or group without opening the Sonos app. For clients who use Apple devices as their primary interface, this integration is consistent.

Voice control with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant is built into the Sonos platform, and we configure both during installation. For clients with a preferred voice ecosystem, Sonos accommodates both without compromise.

Lutron integration is handled through our Crestron programming layer. Lutron lighting and shade events can trigger Sonos audio events and vice versa, creating fully automated scenes that coordinate every sensory element of a room without any manual input from the occupant.

Beyond Streaming: Sonos Ace, Sonos Pro, and Architectural by Sonos

The Sonos platform has expanded well beyond its streaming speaker roots. As an authorized Sonos dealer, we work with the full portfolio:

Architectural by Sonos

In-wall and in-ceiling speakers engineered specifically for the Sonos platform. Designed to disappear into the architecture while delivering sound quality that satisfies genuine audiophiles. We specify and install these in primary living rooms, home offices, and master suites where aesthetics and performance are both paramount.

Sonos Amp

The backbone of our wired Sonos installations. Each Amp drives a stereo pair of passive speakers and connects to the Sonos network. We mount these in equipment rooms for clean, organized installations that are fully serviceable.

Sonos Pro

Sonos’s commercial and hospitality tier delivers centralized fleet management, scheduled content, and enterprise-grade monitoring. appropriate for larger residential estates or commercial properties that require administrative control across many zones.

Sonos Ace

Sonos’s over-ear headphone, featuring TruePlay head-tracking and consistent swap from the home theater system to personal listening. A natural extension of the Sonos ecosystem for clients who want consistent quality from room to room and on the go.

When We Recommend Sonos vs. Autonomic

This is one of the most common questions we hear from clients evaluating whole-home audio. The honest answer is that both platforms are excellent. the right choice depends on the nature of the project, the client’s priorities, and the broader system architecture.

We recommend Sonos when: the priority is simplicity and broad streaming coverage across many rooms; the household includes multiple family members with different tech comfort levels; the audio system is one component of a home that also needs lighting, shading, and HVAC control but doesn’t demand the deepest possible audio performance; or the project is an existing home where wired infrastructure is limited.

We recommend Autonomic when: the client is a serious music listener who wants studio-grade multi-zone audio; the project is a large estate where 20 or more zones require centralized source management; or the Crestron integration demands the deepest possible programming depth with dedicated audio server management. Autonomic’s Mirage Media Server architecture gives us capabilities that go beyond what Sonos’s distributed model supports.

Many of our largest projects use both platforms. Sonos for family areas, guest rooms, and outdoor zones, and Autonomic for the primary listening room and formal entertainment spaces. The two platforms coexist within a single Crestron control layer, giving the client one unified interface regardless of which platform is serving each zone.

For higher-end multi-zone applications: See our Autonomic partner page for details on pro-grade streaming server architecture and its native Crestron integration advantages.
