Can I Add Smart Home Tech to an Existing Home?

I get this question constantly, and the answer is always the same: absolutely. Some of our most satisfying projects are retrofits. existing homes that get a complete technology transformation without tearing walls apart. The approach is different from new construction, but the results can be just as good when the project is planned correctly.

Retrofit vs. New Construction: What’s Different

In new construction, we have access to open walls. We run conduit everywhere, pull Cat6A to every room, pre-wire for speakers, cameras, and shading motors. Everything is planned, and installation is clean.

In a retrofit, we work with what exists. That means leaning on wireless technology where it performs well, identifying where wire is worth the effort, and sequencing the project so each phase delivers real value before the next one begins.

What doesn’t change: the quality of the outcome. We don’t do “good enough for a retrofit.” We engineer the right system for your home as it exists.

Wireless Solutions That Work Well in Retrofit

A lot has changed in the last decade. Wireless technology that was unreliable ten years ago is now production-quality. The right wireless systems, properly configured, perform beautifully:

• Lutron RadioRA: Our go-to wireless lighting control system for retrofit projects. Battery-powered keypads, wireless dimmers, and occupancy sensors install without opening a single wall. The RF protocol is rock-solid. not Wi-Fi dependent.
• Sonos: Distributed audio without in-wall wire. Sonos Amp and architectural speakers in key rooms give you real whole-home audio with minimal disruption.
• Wireless access points: Ubiquiti UniFi APs can often be surface-mounted with a single PoE cable run. far less invasive than pulling structured wiring through finished walls.
• Battery-powered sensors: Occupancy sensors, contact sensors, and smart locks work wirelessly without any wiring changes.

Where You Still Need Wire

I’m honest with clients about this. Some things should not be wireless, regardless of the project type:

• Networking backbone: Your main network runs on wire. Even in a retrofit, running Cat6 to equipment closets and key rooms is worth the disruption.
• Security cameras: PoE cameras on a wired connection are more reliable, more secure, and perform better than wireless alternatives. We find ways to run wire where cameras need to go.
• Dedicated home theater: A real theater room needs wired speaker connections, HDMI infrastructure, and a proper equipment rack. This is one area where we plan a contained wire installation even in an existing home.
• Fixed displays and AV equipment: Wall-mounted displays and in-wall AV systems need wired connections for power and signal.

The Phased Approach

Most retrofit clients don’t want to do everything at once. nor should they. A phased approach lets you build incrementally while keeping each phase fully functional:

• Phase 1. Foundation: Enterprise networking and Lutron lighting control. These two systems have the most daily impact and make every subsequent phase easier.
• Phase 2. Audio: Distributed audio throughout the home. Sonos-based systems integrate cleanly once the network foundation is in place.
• Phase 3. Automation: Crestron control, motorized shading, security integration, and full scene programming.

A technology plan created before Phase 1 ensures that each phase is compatible with the next. and saves you from expensive rework later.
