This project was a 140-seat upscale restaurant in Bergen County. full-service dining room, a bar program, and a covered outdoor patio. The design challenge was creating an audio environment that felt cohesive across three distinct spaces, each with different acoustic characteristics and different service rhythms.

Speaker Placement and Zone Design

The dining room received Sonance Professional Series in-ceiling speakers. eight positions arranged to provide even coverage without any single speaker being obviously audible. The placement was engineered before the ceiling was closed, which is the only way to do it correctly. Speakers positioned after the fact work around the finished ceiling rather than the room’s acoustic geometry.

The bar area has a different energy than the dining room. louder, more present, designed for conversation over a drink rather than a quiet dinner. We ran it as an independent zone at a calibrated level relationship to the dining room: loud enough to have its own atmosphere, quiet enough that guests moving between the two spaces do not feel the shift as jarring. Four Sonance ceiling speakers, higher volume target, slightly warmer EQ character.

The patio is the most acoustically challenging zone in any restaurant. Hard surfaces, open air, variable wind, ambient street noise. We used Sonance outdoor-rated speakers, mounted under the canopy overhang to direct sound downward toward the seating rather than dispersing it into the sky. The volume is set independently, and the system is programmed to mute automatically at a time-of-night threshold consistent with local ordinance requirements.

Source and Scheduling

The source platform is Sonos Business. specifically the Sonos Amp units for each zone, fed from a curated playlist structure the owner manages through Sonos Business’s interface. Playlists are scheduled by daypart: a quieter, lower-energy selection for lunch service and early dinner, building to higher energy for late evening. Volume ramps are automated on a time schedule so staff do not have to remember to adjust levels as the evening progresses.

The Samsung QM43B commercial display at the bar shows the proprietary cocktail menu and rotating content managed through Samsung MagicInfo. It is on a separate input from the audio system and can display sports content during game broadcasts without conflicting with the dining room audio program.

Lighting Tied to Time of Day

The lighting control runs on Lutron, with scenes programmed around the service schedule rather than arbitrary presets. Lunch service runs at a comfortable, natural level. Pre-dinner sets the warm, slightly lower atmosphere typical of evening service. Full dinner service drops another 15 percent. Post-kitchen, the bar scene brings back some energy while the dining room dims further for the remaining guests. The kitchen and service areas are excluded from the scene structure. staff need consistent task lighting regardless of what the front-of-house is doing. That boundary was defined in the programming from day one.

The owner manages the system from a phone app. Volume per zone, lighting scene selection, playlist overrides for private events. all available without calling a technician. For a hospitality environment, operational autonomy is not a nice-to-have. It is the requirement.
