The phrase “we looked at Crestron but it was too expensive” comes up in almost every early client conversation. And every time, it is worth asking: expensive compared to what, exactly? Compared to a system that works, or compared to a proposal that was poorly scoped?

Crestron has an expensive reputation that is partly earned and mostly misunderstood. The platform is not cheap. The hardware carries a real cost premium, and the programming requires certified expertise that takes years to develop. But in a properly designed project with a competent integrator, that cost is justified by a level of reliability, flexibility, and longevity that no consumer or prosumer platform can match. The problem is that not every project is properly designed, and not every integrator is competent.

Crestron hardware is a relatively small portion of total project cost. A processor, a few touchpanels, and the I/O modules to connect your systems are a known, fixed expense. The company maintains backward compatibility across hardware generations, which means a processor installed today will still be programmable and supportable fifteen years from now. The programming can be updated, extended, and modified at any point to accommodate new systems, new devices, or changed preferences. without replacing hardware.

Compare that to a “less expensive” platform that requires a full replacement every five to seven years when the manufacturer discontinues the product, drops app support, or is acquired. This is one reason cheap AV installations often cost more long-term. When you factor in total cost of ownership. hardware, programming, service, and eventual replacement. the Crestron system often comes out ahead. The initial number is higher. The lifetime number frequently is not.

The Single-Platform Argument

One of Crestron’s most underappreciated advantages is that it eliminates the integration tax. When your lighting, climate, shading, AV distribution, security, and access control all run through a single processor, there are no third-party API dependencies, no cross-platform compatibility issues, and no scenes that behave differently depending on which system got the command first. The programming is the integration. Every system talks to the same brain.

That coherence has real value. It means fewer service calls. It means a homeowner who can actually use the system without knowing which app to open. It means that when something needs to change. a new room addition, a new AV source, a new access control system. the change gets made in one place by one programmer who already knows the entire system.

Choosing the Right Integrator Matters More Than the Platform
