A luxury home network is the invisible utility that carries every other technology system in the house. 4K streaming, Sonos multiroom audio, Crestron control signals, Lutron lighting, security cameras, climate sensors, door locks, and a dozen family devices simultaneously. It is engineered infrastructure, not a consumer product you plug into a wall.

Network design begins with understanding the loads: how many concurrent streams, what control protocols require deterministic latency, where cameras transmit, how IoT devices communicate. From that load map comes a physical design: the cable plant, the switching topology, the access point placement, and the VLAN architecture that keeps every system isolated and prioritized.

The Problem

Why Luxury Homes Need Designed Networks, Not Consumer Routers

A $20,000 Crestron automation system is only as reliable as the $150 router it rides on. Consumer routers. even premium mesh systems. are designed for average households with a dozen devices and one streaming service. A modern luxury home runs 80 to 200 connected devices across five categories with fundamentally different traffic profiles.

Traffic Volume

Multiple simultaneous 4K streams, cloud-based security camera uplinks, and whole-home audio require sustained throughput that exceeds consumer router capacity during peak hours. typically 7pm to 10pm.

Latency Sensitivity

Crestron control signals, occupancy sensors, and lighting scene triggers require sub-10ms response. Consumer routers do not prioritize control traffic over entertainment traffic.

Device Count

Consumer routers begin degrading performance above 30 simultaneous connected clients. A fully integrated estate routinely runs 100 to 200 concurrent connections across IP cameras, smart displays, speakers, thermostats, locks, and AV devices.

Security Exposure

IoT devices. cameras, locks, smart appliances. run unpatched firmware with known vulnerabilities. On a flat consumer network, a compromised camera has access to every other device. Proper VLAN segregation eliminates this attack surface entirely.

Engineering

Restrepo’s Network Architecture

Every Restrepo network is built on four non-negotiable engineering principles. These are not upsells. They are the baseline for any system that performs reliably at scale.

Wired Cat6A Backbone

Every access point, every AV rack, every security camera, and every network switch connects via a dedicated wired Cat6A or fiber run. WiFi is the last-hop delivery mechanism for devices that cannot be wired. it is never the backbone. This eliminates the latency and reliability problems inherent in wireless backhaul.

Calibrated AP Density

Access points are placed on a grid based on signal modeling: typically one AP per 1,500 to 2,000 square feet, never one per floor. Each AP serves a defined coverage cell. Neighboring APs operate on non-overlapping channels. Clients roam between APs without dropped sessions because every AP shares a unified controller configuration.

VLAN Segmentation

Traffic is divided into logical networks that cannot communicate with each other unless explicitly permitted. A standard Restrepo design includes separate VLANs for owner devices, AV systems, IoT and smart home, IP cameras, and guest access. each with its own firewall policy and bandwidth priority.

IoT Isolation

Smart home devices, cameras, and connected appliances are placed on a dedicated IoT VLAN with outbound-only internet access and no lateral access to owner devices or control systems. A compromised smart appliance cannot reach your Crestron processor, your NAS, or your family’s laptops.

From Site Survey to SLA-Backed Support

Every Restrepo network engagement follows a defined five-phase process. No shortcuts, no assumptions, no generic configurations deployed from a template.

Site Survey & RF Mapping

We walk every square foot of the residence with spectrum analyzers and signal mapping software. We document existing infrastructure, identify interference sources, locate mechanical penetrations for cable runs, and map the full device inventory. Construction drawings are reviewed to identify structural obstacles. stone walls, elevator shafts, mechanical rooms. that affect propagation.

Network Architecture Design

Our engineers produce a complete network design document: cable plant diagram, switch topology, AP placement map with coverage modeling, VLAN architecture, firewall rule sets, QoS policy, and IP address plan. This document is reviewed with the homeowner and, where applicable, the general contractor or technology integrator for the broader project.

Installation

All structured cabling is installed by our in-house team. we do not subcontract cable work. Every Cat6A run is tested end-to-end to TIA-568 standards before equipment is racked. Switching, routing, and access point hardware is installed, powered, and configured from our design documentation.

Commissioning & Load Testing

We commission the network under simulated peak load: every AV system active, every camera streaming, guest and IoT traffic running simultaneously. We verify throughput at every AP, confirm VLAN isolation with penetration tests, validate QoS prioritization under load, and document baseline performance metrics that our Care Plan team uses for ongoing comparison.

Care Plan Monitoring

Every Restrepo network is enrolled in our Care Plan at commissioning. We monitor device health, link status, and performance metrics in real time. Anomalies are flagged and addressed before they become failures. Firmware updates are staged, tested, and deployed without disruption to the home.
