What Is an Invisible Speaker?
An invisible speaker is a driver assembly mounted behind a finished wall or ceiling surface -- drywall, plaster, or stretched fabric -- and then taped, mudded, skim-coated, and painted over so the wall plane remains completely unbroken. There is no grille, no baffle ring, no visible hardware of any kind. You hear the room fill with sound; you see only architecture.
The technology works by coupling a specialized driver to a large radiating surface -- the wall or ceiling itself. That surface becomes the diaphragm. Because the radiating area is much larger than a traditional cone, invisible speakers can fill a room with even, enveloping sound at modest volume levels, making them ideal for spaces where audio should be ambient and omnipresent rather than directional and obvious.

When an interior designer has specified every millimeter of wall surface, a speaker grille -- no matter how refined -- is a disruption. Invisible speakers preserve the design intent completely.

Design Strategy
Placement Is the Craft
"Hidden" does not mean "ignore the math." Invisible speakers still obey the same acoustic laws as any other transducer. The placement strategy that governs a Restrepo invisible audio design:
- - Stereo imaging: invisible speakers throw a wider dispersion pattern than cone speakers, but mirroring across the listening axis is still essential for a stable stereo image.
- - Ceiling vs. wall: ceilings work for ambient music and Dolby Atmos overhead channels; walls work for primary listening positions where imaging precision matters.
- - Corner distance: minimum 6-8 feet from corners to avoid bass buildup and room-mode excitation.
- - Density over volume: more speakers at lower output produces smoother, more even coverage than fewer speakers driven hard -- especially in large open-plan spaces.
- - Room acoustics: RT60 (reverberation time), room volume, and surface absorption all influence the final EQ map applied post-install.
The Restrepo Process
From Rough-In to Tuned
Rough-In
Backboxes installed during framing or after rock-out, before drywall. The backbox isolates the speaker from adjacent rooms and controls internal volume for bass performance.
Mud-In
Speaker face positioned flush with the drywall plane. The transition is taped and mudded as part of standard drywall finishing, with no proud edge or visible reveal.
Skim-Coat
The wall finisher applies a Level 5 skim coat over the speaker face. This step is critical -- anything below Level 5 leaves visible tool marks that betray the speaker's presence.
Paint
Standard latex paint in any client-specified finish. Heavy-texture coatings are avoided -- they can damp high-frequency transmission. Flat or eggshell is preferred over heavy sand textures.
Tuning
Post-paint, our team returns for acoustic calibration. System EQ compensates for any high-frequency rolloff introduced by the finishing process, producing a natural, flat response curve.
