Every speaker grille, every cable raceway, every wall plate that the operator could have hidden and chose not to is a signal the experience is being managed by gear instead of by design. The job is to make the room feel inevitable.

The decisions you have to make.

Every spa wellness project comes down to a handful of real decisions made early. Owner, GM, F&B director, and integrator all need to be in the same room before drawings get stamped. Wait, and the easy answer becomes the expensive one.

  • System class and control simplicity. The operator has to decide whether this is a basic distributed audio job or a fully integrated platform with lighting, scheduling, paging, and remote monitoring. Simpler systems cost less and are easier for staff to use, but they can create more handoffs and more manual adjustment during service hours.
  • Acoustics and zone isolation. Spa rooms, hydrotherapy areas, lounges, corridors, and quiet zones often need different SPL targets and different speaker types. If isolation is poor, music bleeds into treatment rooms or relaxation areas, which guests notice immediately and associate with lower quality.
  • Humidity, cleaning, and durability. Steam, splash zones, disinfectants, and constant foot traffic shorten equipment life, especially for speakers, touch panels, and wall controls. Hospitality-grade hardware costs more up front, but it reduces callbacks, corrosion, and visible wear.
  • Lighting behavior and scene control. Relaxation spaces need dimming curves, low-glare fixtures, and programmable scenes that match dayparts, treatments, and occupancy. The trade-off is between elegant guest mood and staff flexibility; if scenes are too complicated, employees will bypass them.
  • Network design and IT ownership. Even small spa AV systems now depend on reliable PoE, VLANs, bandwidth, and secure remote access. If the network is treated as an afterthought, the project may be cheap to install but expensive to support and unstable during peak operations.
  • Guest-facing interfaces versus staff-only controls. Operators must choose whether controls live on wall keypads, tablets, or centralized BMS/room-control screens. Guest-friendly interfaces reduce training and keep rooms consistent, but too much guest access can lead to accidental changes and service complaints.
  • Service hours and phasing. In resorts and clubs, work often has to happen around treatments, dining, and guest check-in windows. The cheaper bid is not always the better one if it requires extended shutdowns, noisy cutovers, or multiple return visits.

Entry tier: $25,000-$75,000 all-in: Basic multi-zone background music, simple paging, a few treatment-room or lounge zones, basic lighting scenes, commercial speakers/amplification, rack build, programming, commissioning, and staff training for a small spa or wellness area.

Full spa floor

Mid tier: $75,000-$250,000 all-in: Integrated audio for several zones, centralized control, scheduled daypart changes, dimming/scenes, networked DSP, better acoustic treatment coordination, concealed cabling/conduit, commissioning, and formal operator training for a larger spa, club, or resort relaxation suite.

The most common mistakes.

These show up over and over in projects we inherit from other firms or from venues that tried to coordinate the work themselves. Catch them at the design stage and the project costs less, finishes faster, and serves members or guests the way ownership intended.

  • Specifying consumer or light-commercial gear in a humid, high-use environment: Spa areas punish electronics with moisture, cleaning chemicals, and constant touching. Consumer products may look fine at bid time but fail early, discolor, or become hard to support.
  • Ignoring acoustics and room leakage: Operators often assume better speakers fix bad rooms, but reflective tile, glass, and hard finishes can create harsh sound or bleed between areas. Acoustic treatment and speaker placement matter as much as brand choice.
  • Underbudgeting cable pathways, conduit, and power: Hidden infrastructure usually costs more than expected, especially in retrofit properties with finished ceilings and masonry walls. If conduit and pathway capacity are not planned early, change orders accumulate fast.
  • Treating the network as optional: AV-over-IP, PoE endpoints, remote support, and control systems all depend on stable switching and segmentation. A weak network can make a premium AV system feel unreliable even when the hardware is fine.
  • Skipping commissioning and tuning: Systems that are installed but not tuned often have uneven levels, bad presets, or poorly chosen source routing. In a spa, that creates audible distractions that guests notice instantly.
  • No service contract or spares plan: Hospitality environments need response times, firmware updates, and replacement parts. Without a service agreement, small failures can linger and become visible guest-experience problems.

The brands and platforms that actually serve hospitality.

Most of what gets sold as "commercial" at the box-store level does not survive a real hospitality environment. These are the platforms we specify and stand behind because they hold up over ten and fifteen year service lives in venues that run seven days a week.

  • Crestron. Best fit when the spa or resort wants unified control for AV, lighting, shading, HVAC touchpoints, and room automation across guest-facing and staff-facing interfaces. It is strongest in higher-end, standardized environments where central management and repeatable scenes matter.
  • QSC (Q-SYS): A full-stack audio, video, and control platform that fits distributed audio, paging, zoning, and centralized monitoring in hospitality. It is useful when the owner wants one platform for multiple zones and IT-friendly architecture.
  • Biamp. Strong for speech, paging, zoning, and DSP-driven audio management in hospitality spaces that need reliable tuning and straightforward deployment. It fits well where audio quality and consistent room behavior matter more than flashy interfaces.
  • Shure. Primarily relevant for microphones and wireless audio in wellness classes, instructor-led sessions, or multipurpose resort spaces that occasionally need live speech capture. It is less central for pure background music, but important where voice intelligibility matters.
  • BSS. Commonly used as part of installed audio signal processing and control in larger hospitality systems. It fits when the project needs flexible DSP, routing, and integration with other commercial audio ecosystems.
  • Bose Professional. Often used for lobby, lounge, relaxation, and smaller distributed audio applications where uniform coverage and discreet loudspeaker design matter. It is a practical choice for branded sound environments in hospitality.
  • JBL Professional. Relevant for higher-output zones, outdoor areas, event-adjacent wellness spaces, and projects that need a broad installed-sound lineup. Its tools and system ecosystem fit system design and performance prediction for larger spaces.
  • Lutron Athena/Vive. A strong lighting control option for guest relaxation spaces because it supports scene control, dimming, and scalable lighting management. It is especially relevant where mood, low-glare scenes, and energy management are part of the project.

How this integrates with the rest of the operation.

A real hospitality venue is one operation, not seven systems. Whatever scope you are reading about here touches the POS, the reservation platform, the kitchen display, the lighting, the BMS, the security layer, and the network. The integrator's job is to make those handoffs invisible to staff and guests.

POS. Restaurant and lounge music or paging may need to coordinate with ordering workflow, especially in wellness cafes, juice bars, and F&B-adjacent relaxation spaces. Reservation systems: Spa scheduling can drive room scenes, occupancy-based lighting, or treatment-room availability messages.

BMS. HVAC, temperature, and humidity control often affect guest comfort more than audio itself in spa areas. AV and lighting scenes should align with building automation so the room feels consistent when occupied or unoccupied.

Lifecycle, maintenance, and what to expect over ten years.

Year 1: Expect calibration, scene adjustments, source-list cleanup, and small control fixes after staff begins real-world use. Hospitality spaces often reveal usability problems only after launch, so the first year is about tuning levels, labels, and workflows. Year 3: Review firmware, credentials, rack airflow, and speaker/volume inconsistencies; replace any early-failing endpoints, wall controls, or PoE devices. In humid or heavily cleaned areas, corrosion and wear often show up earlier than in office environments.
