Quick Answer

Which Whole-Home Audio System Is Right for You?

Quick Answer

For luxury whole-home audio, the right system depends on your control platform. Crestron homes can choose from three native audio architectures: Crestron DM NAX (network audio, current platform), Crestron Sonnex (matrix audio, now discontinued. legacy installs only), and Crestron AMS (commercial-scale). Savant homes use Savant IP Audio. Control4 homes use Triad. Sonos Amp is the lifestyle pick for simplicity. Autonomic Mirage is the dealer-grade matrix audio choice for non-platform-locked installs.

Most content on whole-home audio comparisons is written by people who have never specified or commissioned a system. This guide draws from Restrepo Innovations’ direct design and installation experience with all five platforms across luxury residences, commercial facilities, and government buildings in NJ, NY, and CT. Every product listed below has been verified against manufacturer current product pages as of April 2026. Discontinued products are clearly labeled.

Sonos: Lifestyle Audio at Luxury Scale

Sonos is a consumer-to-prosumer wireless audio platform that pairs software-first design with a broad ecosystem of streaming services. At the installation level, the Sonos Amp connects to passive architectural speakers and integrates into any room’s existing wiring, making it the simplest path to multi-zone audio for homes that prioritize ease of use over deep control-system integration.

Founded in 2002 and now publicly traded (NASDAQ: SONO), Sonos has built the most recognizable multi-room audio brand in the consumer market. In 2026, the current professional product for architectural installs is the Sonos Amp. a Class D amplifier rated at 125 watts per channel that accepts passive speakers via standard binding posts and adds any room to the Sonos ecosystem over the home’s Wi-Fi or Ethernet network.

Sonos announced the Sonos Amp Multi at Integrated Systems Europe in February 2026. a professional-grade multi-channel amplifier designed for installation partners. As of April 2026, Amp Multi is available through Sonos installation partners in select markets and expected to expand availability through mid-2026. The Amp (single-zone) remains the primary available product for most installations today.

The Sonos Pro dashboard is the current platform for business and multi-location management, offering remote monitoring, scheduled playback, and commercially licensed music (ad-free). For residential luxury installs, most integrators deploy Sonos Amp units directly within the Sonos S2 ecosystem, with control passed through Crestron, Control4, or Savant drivers where a full control system is present.

What Sonos Does Well

Sonos is the most polished consumer audio experience available. The app is fast, reliable (post the 2024 redesign recovery), and works flawlessly for homeowners who want to pick up their phone and have music playing in any room within seconds. Streaming service breadth is unmatched. Sonos integrates natively with over 100 services including Spotify Connect, Apple Music, Amazon Music, TIDAL, Qobuz, Pandora, SiriusXM, and AirPlay 2. Voice control via Amazon Alexa and Apple Siri is built in. The Sonos ecosystem scales incrementally: a client can start with two zones and add zones one Amp at a time without replacing any infrastructure.

Real Limits for Luxury Installs

Sonos is software-locked in ways that matter at scale. DSP room correction is minimal compared to Crestron DM NAX or Autonomic systems. There is no hardware matrix. zone routing is network-based, which is fine for residential but creates constraints in complex commercial environments requiring DSP, paging, and failover. At scale (16+ zones), the per-Amp cost model becomes expensive relative to a proper matrix audio system. Sonos warranty is 1 year standard, with a 1-year extension on select products for purchases within the extension period. meaning a $700 Amp may need replacement within 2-3 years at a luxury home’s usage level.

Restrepo’s Perspective

We specify and install Sonos when the client brief calls for lifestyle audio. typically a second home, a condo, or a primary residence where the homeowner strongly prefers simple app-based control over deep integration. For full-estate builds where we are commissioning Crestron lighting, shading, and AV together, we default to Crestron DM NAX for audio to keep everything in the same toolchain. We also integrate Sonos into existing Crestron homes via the two-way Crestron driver when the client already owns Sonos equipment and wants to bring it under Crestron control.

Autonomic Mirage: Professional Matrix Audio Without Platform Lock

Autonomic is a dealer-only whole-home audio platform now owned by Snap One, the parent company of Control4 and Triad. The Mirage Media Server (MMS) line is the professional standard for multi-zone audio in homes and estates that require dealer-grade quality but are not locked to a single control platform. Autonomic works with Crestron, Savant, Control4, URC, RTI, and others simultaneously.

Autonomic was founded as an independent audio technology company before being acquired by Snap One (then SnapAV). The brand remains active under Snap One’s portfolio, selling through the same dealer channel that handles Control4 and Triad. The current flagship product line is the Autonomic Mirage Media Server (MMS) family, available in configurations ranging from 2 audio streams (MMS-2A) to 6 audio streams (MMS-5A) with virtually unlimited zone distribution when paired with Autonomic amplifiers.

A key differentiator of the Autonomic platform is its control-system agnosticism: Autonomic publishes a fully documented two-way IP API, and certified drivers exist for every major control platform. This means an integrator can deploy Autonomic as the audio engine in a Crestron-controlled home, a Savant-controlled home, or a Control4-controlled home. and the full feature set (metadata, now-playing, transport, volume) passes cleanly to whatever control interface the homeowner uses. For custom integrators working across multiple control platforms, Autonomic provides consistency in the audio layer regardless of which control system is specified.

The MMS-5A supports high-resolution audio at 24-bit/192kHz, streams from Spotify, TIDAL, Deezer, Qobuz, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, SiriusXM Internet Radio, Pandora, and accepts AirPlay guest streaming. Local NAS and USB storage are supported alongside cloud-based libraries. Each server can aggregate music across multiple Mirage Media Servers for estates with multi-building audio requirements.

What Autonomic Does Well

Autonomic is purpose-built for professional whole-home audio. The DSP quality, streaming service integration, and high-resolution audio playback are all at the dealer-grade level. The eAudioCast technology delivers audio-over-Ethernet to remote zones without dedicated audio cabling. making it practical for estates where running new wire is not feasible. Autonomic’s 2-year limited warranty is standard for the dealer-grade audio space. The Snap One ownership means dealers can specify Autonomic alongside Control4 and Episode through a single distributor relationship.

Real Limits

Autonomic is dealer/install-only. it cannot be purchased retail and requires a certified integrator to commission. Setup is more complex than Sonos. The Snap One parent company also sells competing audio products under the Triad brand, creating some internal channel tension. For homes already committed to a Crestron, Savant, or Control4 platform, the native audio solutions (DM NAX, Savant IP Audio, Triad) typically offer tighter integration and a single-vendor support relationship.

Restrepo’s Perspective

We specify Autonomic Mirage when a client needs serious whole-home audio and is not locked to a single control platform, or when they want the audio system to remain platform-agnostic for future control-system flexibility. Autonomic is also our recommendation when a client is upgrading audio in an existing home and wants to avoid committing fully to a Crestron, Savant, or Control4 audio ecosystem before deciding on their long-term control platform.

Crestron Audio: DM NAX, Sonnex (Discontinued), and AMS

Crestron is the only control platform that gives an integrator three audio architectures to choose from. IP-distributed (DM NAX), legacy matrix (Sonnex, now discontinued), and commercial-scale (AMS). all commissioned in the same Crestron toolchain. For new builds and full-estate deployments in 2026, Crestron DM NAX is the current standard. Restrepo Innovations, as an Elite Pro Crestron Dealer, designs and engineers all three where applicable.

Important accuracy note: The Crestron Sonnex SWAMP-24X8 was confirmed discontinued as of our April 2026 verification. It appears in Crestron’s catalog under Inactive/Discontinued (crestron.com). The current Crestron audio platform for residential and commercial distribution is Crestron DM NAX. We include Sonnex information here for clients with existing Sonnex systems considering upgrades.

Crestron DM NAX. Current Platform

Audio-over-IP · Active · Residential + Commercial · Verified crestron.com April 2026

Crestron DM NAX (Digital Media Network Audio Exchange) is Crestron’s current Audio-over-IP platform, built on the AES67 standard. DM NAX puts multiroom audio distribution on the IP network, eliminating the need for dedicated audio matrix wiring. The flagship amplifier is the DM-NAX-8ZSA, which delivers 8 amplified stereo zones at 150 watts per channel (8 ohms) or 500 watts bridged. Each zone has its own independent streaming service player supporting AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, Deezer, SiriusXM, Pandora, Internet Radio, and Podcasts. meaning every room in the house can be playing a completely different source simultaneously without any additional streaming hardware. A single Crestron Home OS processor supports up to 32 DM NAX devices and 256 audio output zones. SIMPL Windows programming removes that ceiling. the system scales as far as the network hardware will support. DM NAX integrates natively with DM NVX video-over-IP, allowing audio from any video source (TV, Blu-ray, AppleTV) to be routed to any audio zone. DSP is built in at every zone: 10-band EQ, bass and treble control, speaker protection and limiting, delay, and six tone profiles. HouseCurve integration (announced September 2025) adds app-based acoustic room tuning. Voice control via Amazon Alexa is supported within Crestron Home OS.

Crestron Sonnex (SWAMP). Discontinued

Hardware Matrix · Discontinued · Legacy / Existing Installs Only

The Crestron Sonnex SWAMP-24X8 was a dedicated hardware matrix audio system that distributed up to 24 stereo inputs to 8 amplified zone outputs, expandable via SWAMPE zone expanders. It used the proprietary Sonnex Link transport protocol over CAT5 wiring. The SWAMP-24X8 has been discontinued and is no longer actively sold. Both the SWAMP-24X8 and expansion units (SWAMPE-4, SWAMPE-8) appear under Inactive/Discontinued in the Crestron product catalog. Crestron True Blue Support continues to service existing Sonnex installations. If you have an existing Sonnex system, contact Restrepo Innovations. we design DM NAX migration paths for existing Crestron homes that maintain as much existing infrastructure as possible during the upgrade.

Crestron AMS. Commercial / Large-Scale Audio

Commercial Audio Processor · Active · Hospitality / Government / Large Commercial

The Crestron AMS (Audio Management System) line is Crestron’s commercial-grade audio platform for building-scale deployments. hotels, corporate campuses, government facilities, and large hospitality venues. AMS supports 32+ zones with paging, routing, DSP, and distributed-mode failover. capabilities that go well beyond residential audio distribution. AMS is particularly relevant for government and DoD deployments, where Crestron’s FISMA-compliant infrastructure and certified-vendor status make it the de facto standard. For true commercial scale. a 200-room hotel, a government operations center, or a multi-tenant commercial building. AMS is the appropriate Crestron audio architecture. Pricing is fully project-scoped and available through Elite Pro Crestron Dealer quotation only.

Why Crestron Audio Is Different

The defining advantage of specifying Crestron DM NAX in a Crestron home is commissioning unity. The audio system is programmed, tested, and serviced in the same SIMPL/Crestron Home OS environment as the lighting, shading, HVAC integration, and AV. A single integrator owns the entire technology layer. There is no third-party audio driver to maintain, no additional warranty relationship to manage, and no software version mismatch between the control system and the audio system. When the client calls with an issue at 11 PM, the same firm that owns the Crestron program owns the audio. that accountability is worth the premium.

Crestron processors paired with a Flex Care plan carry up to a 5-year warranty with direct Crestron engineering support access. Restrepo Innovations, as an Elite Pro Crestron Dealer, provides priority RMA processing and direct Crestron engineering escalation on all Crestron audio deployments.

Savant IP Audio: Native Audio for Savant Homes

Savant IP Audio is the first-party audio distribution platform for Savant control systems. Built on the AVB (Audio Video Bridging) 802.1 IEEE standard, Savant IP Audio distributes high-quality audio over the home’s IP network without dedicated audio wiring. Up to 16 Savant IP Audio units can be interconnected, supporting as many as 96 listening zones in a single synchronized whole-home audio system.

The current Savant IP Audio product line was substantially refreshed in 2023 with the introduction of the Savant IP Audio 50 (125 watts per channel, 4 amplified zones + 2 pre-amp zones per unit) and the Savant IP Audio 125 (125 watts per channel, same zone layout, higher sustained output). The IP Audio 125 is the flagship unit for demanding residential applications. Each unit supports dual digital optical inputs, dual analog RCA inputs, a built-in stream of Savant Music (commercially licensed), and AirPlay streaming. Up to 16 units interconnected via AVB 802.1 expand the system to 96 zones.

Savant also introduced the IP Audio 8 Output and IP Audio 7 Input modules in 2023. allowing audio to be distributed to and from remote areas of a property without home-run audio cables. This architecture is similar in concept to Crestron’s DM NAX approach: audio travels over the network, not over dedicated audio infrastructure.

What Savant IP Audio Does Well

Savant IP Audio integrates more tightly with the Savant control experience than any third-party audio platform can. Scene-based control. a Savant hallmark. extends fully to audio: a “Good Morning” scene can bring up specific music in the kitchen, master bath, and great room simultaneously at pre-set volumes, triggered from a single Savant keypad press. The Savant app’s music interface is among the most polished in the industry, with album art, playback controls, and zone management in a single view. Savant’s AI-driven updates at ISE 2026 extend to audio control. conversational voice commands for music in 56+ languages are part of the platform roadmap.

Real Limits

Savant IP Audio is a Savant-only ecosystem. it requires a Savant control processor and will not function as a standalone product. The Savant dealer base is smaller than Crestron’s, and fewer commercial deployments exist relative to Crestron for large-scale government or hospitality applications. Streaming service selection is narrower than Crestron DM NAX or Autonomic. primarily Savant Music and AirPlay, with third-party services accessible through Savant’s app layer.

Restrepo’s Perspective

We specify and install Savant IP Audio for homes where Savant is the chosen control platform. For Savant homes, Savant IP Audio is the obvious first-party choice for the same reason Crestron DM NAX is the obvious choice for Crestron homes: commissioning, service, and support all live in one toolchain under one dealer relationship. For clients considering Savant, we are happy to walk through the full platform comparison against Crestron. see our control systems comparison here.

Control4 + Triad: One Ecosystem, One Snap One Parent

Triad is the first-party audio brand owned by Snap One, the same parent company that owns Control4. Triad products integrate natively into Control4 OS via the Ryff audio platform, making them the preferred audio specification for Control4-controlled homes. Triad manufactures amplifiers, audio matrix switches, in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, and outdoor speakers. a complete acoustic stack under a single dealer relationship.

The current Triad amplifier lineup was significantly updated in 2024–2025. The Triad SA1 (announced April 2024) replaced the Triad One as the single-zone streaming amplifier: 200 watts per channel, HDMI ARC/eARC, 6-band parametric EQ, hi-res audio up to 192kHz/24-bit via Ryff, and native Control4 integration. The Triad SA1 is Ryff-enabled, meaning it synchronizes lossless audio across zones without lag or echo. The Triad AMS-24 and AMS-8 audio matrix switches handle source routing at 24-input/8-zone and 8-input/8-zone scales respectively. Triad’s new RackAmp subwoofer amplifiers (launched January 2025) provide up to 2,400 watts for high-performance cinema and listening rooms.

Control4 X4 (the current OS) adds AirPlay 2 support to the Triad SA1, expanding streaming options alongside the existing Ryff-based services (Pandora, Spotify Connect, SiriusXM, TIDAL, and more).

What Control4 + Triad Does Well

The combination of Control4 OS and Triad hardware is the most tightly integrated audio experience in the Control4 ecosystem. Because both are owned by Snap One, software updates, firmware, and driver compatibility are managed together. no third-party integration gaps. The Triad SA1’s HDMI ARC/eARC capability is a practical advantage: it allows TV audio to route through the Triad amplifier without additional switching hardware. OvrC integration (Snap One’s remote management platform) gives the dealer real-time insight into the SA1’s status, facilitating faster remote troubleshooting. Triad’s speaker line. in-wall, in-ceiling, outdoor, and cinema. pairs with the amplifier lineup for a complete first-party acoustic system.

Real Limits

Control4 and Triad are designed for the residential and light-commercial market. bars, restaurants, retail. For complex multi-tenant commercial, government, or hospitality-at-scale deployments, Crestron AMS is the more appropriate architecture. The Triad system requires Control4 for full feature access; using Triad amplifiers in non-Control4 systems is possible but loses the native integration advantages. Control4 OS subscription (Control4 Connect) is required to access X4 features.

Restrepo’s Perspective

For Control4 homes, Triad is our standard audio specification. The native integration, single-vendor support model, and evolving Ryff audio platform make it the logical first-party choice. We do not mix Control4 with Autonomic or Sonos unless the client has strong existing preferences. the commissioning and support simplicity of a native stack is worth preserving. For clients choosing between Control4 and Crestron as the control platform, our control systems comparison walks through the full platform-level decision.

Total Cost of Ownership

10-Year TCO: Why Warranty Terms Matter

The sticker price of an audio system is only part of the cost story. Warranty terms, hardware replacement cycles, and software-locked obsolescence all affect the total 10-year cost of whole-home audio. Here is how each platform compares over a realistic 10-year ownership window.

Sonos hardware carries a 1-year standard warranty, extended to 2 years for select products during specific purchase windows (per Sonos’ October 2024 warranty extension program). At a luxury home’s usage level, Sonos Amp units in high-use zones (kitchen, outdoor, gym) may require replacement every 4–7 years. With 12 zones of Sonos Amp at $700 per unit list, a 10-year replacement budget of $4,000–$8,000 in equipment alone is realistic, not counting labor.

Autonomic carries a 2-year limited warranty. The MMS server hardware is typically more durable than per-room streaming amps; a realistic 10-year lifecycle is 1 server refresh (years 6–8) plus occasional amp replacements.

Crestron DM NAX amplifiers carry a 3-year standard warranty, extendable to 5 years with a Flex Care plan. Crestron processors (the Crestron Home OS engine driving the DM NAX system) carry the same 3/5-year terms. Crestron’s development platform maintains backward compatibility across processor generations. meaning a software program written today runs on the Crestron processor without full reprogramming. This processor continuity materially reduces 10-year TCO for Crestron deployments. For context: see our Crestron warranty detailed look for the full terms breakdown. Also note that Crestron residential lighting hardware carries a Lifetime Limited Warranty. in whole-home builds where audio, lighting, and shading all commission under Crestron, the TCO advantage compounds further.

Triad SA1 carries a 2-year limited warranty. Control4 OS requires an active Control4 Connect subscription for X4 feature access. a recurring cost that should be factored into TCO. Savant IP Audio warranty terms follow Savant’s standard limited warranty; Savant system TCO should include any required Savant service plan.

TCO Summary by Platform: Crestron DM NAX in a full Crestron home (lighting + shading + audio all warranted under Crestron terms, with Flex Care on processors) offers the strongest 10-year TCO for a large luxury estate. Autonomic is mid-range TCO with good hardware longevity. Sonos is low entry cost but higher long-term replacement frequency. Control4 + Triad is competitive mid-range with the addition of recurring OS subscription costs. Speaker Pairing

Speakers Are Independent of the Amplifier Choice

One of the most common misconceptions in whole-home audio planning is that the control or amplifier platform dictates the speaker brand. It does not. The amplifier choice above is entirely independent of the architectural speaker brand.

Any of the five audio platforms covered in this guide can drive speakers from Sonance, Origin Acoustics, Stealth Acoustics, Coastal Source, Triad, Episode, and other architectural speaker brands (assuming standard 4–8 ohm passive speakers and appropriate impedance matching). The amplifier output. whether from a Sonos Amp, a Crestron DM-NAX-8ZSA, or an Autonomic amplifier. connects to the speaker via standard speaker wire.

Invisible and architectural speakers: If your project requires speakers that disappear entirely into the architecture. flush-mount invisible speakers, in-plaster speakers, or fully concealed outdoor units. the amplifier platform decision is separate from the speaker selection. We work with Stealth Acoustics, Sonance, and Origin Acoustics for invisible-speaker applications. See our invisible speakers guide for a close look on installation and acoustic performance. For speaker pairings specific to your project, contact us directly. speaker selection depends on room dimensions, ceiling construction, and listening priorities, not the amplifier brand.

By Application

Whole-Home Audio Across Four Sectors

The right audio platform varies not just by home size but by the type of building and ownership context. Here is how each platform maps to residential, commercial, hospitality, and government deployments.

Residential

All five platforms operate in residential contexts. Sonos and Triad dominate the mid-luxury segment ($5K–$50K). Autonomic and Savant IP Audio dominate the luxury residential segment ($20K–$80K). Crestron DM NAX dominates ultra-luxury estates and any home where audio commissions alongside Crestron lighting and shading ($40K–$200K+).

Commercial

Crestron AMS and Crestron DM NAX dominate large-scale commercial deployments (corporate campuses, multi-tenant buildings, broadcast facilities). Control4 and Triad serve bars, restaurants, gyms, and retail. Sonos Pro handles small retail and restaurant backgrounds via the Sonos Pro dashboard. Autonomic is used in upscale commercial environments requiring multi-zone dealer-grade audio without a Crestron commitment.

Hospitality

Hotels and resorts at the luxury tier typically specify Crestron AMS or Crestron DM NAX for lobby, ballroom, restaurant, and in-room audio distribution. Savant is seen in boutique hotels with high design standards. Control4 + Triad serves mid-tier hospitality and independent hotel operations. Sonos Pro handles smaller boutique hotels via its dashboard platform.

Government / Military

Crestron AMS and Crestron DM NAX are the dominant audio platforms in government and DoD facilities. Crestron holds FISMA-compatible infrastructure, certified-vendor status, and the depth of programming control required for classified-facility applications. Government procurements frequently specify Crestron by name. Restrepo Innovations has direct experience designing and commissioning Crestron audio systems for government clients. contact us for cleared-facility project requirements.

Additional Platforms

Honorable Mentions and Discontinued Platforms

Several other whole-home audio platforms exist or existed in the market. Here is a brief status note on each, verified as of April 2026.

Platform Status Notes

Russound (Active. entry-tier). Russound continues to manufacture and sell the SMZ8 (8-source/8-zone) and SMZ16-PRE (16x16 matrix pre-amp) for residential and light-commercial applications. Russound is a practical choice for entry-tier whole-home audio at price points below Autonomic or Crestron. Not typically specified at the luxury level. NuVo (Legrand). Production ended end of 2021; technical support ended October 2023. Fully discontinued. do not specify. Episode (Snap One / ADI). Episode manufactures speakers and the new Episode Hybrid Amplifiers (1200W and 2400W, launched July 2025) designed for large-scale outdoor and indoor speaker systems at 70V/8-ohm. Episode is primarily a speaker and large-venue amplifier brand. not a standalone whole-home audio matrix platform in the same category as those above. JBL Synthesis. Premium cinema and home theater audio; not typically specified as a distributed whole-home audio platform. Best suited for dedicated listening rooms and dedicated home theaters. Origin Acoustics. Primarily an architectural speaker manufacturer; does not produce its own distributed audio matrix amplifiers at the whole-home-system level. Pairs with any of the amplifier platforms above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whole-Home Audio FAQ

Questions we receive regularly from homeowners, architects, and developers evaluating whole-home audio platforms for luxury residential and commercial projects.

There is no single best system. the right choice depends on your control platform and project scale. For Crestron homes, Crestron DM NAX is the current native platform and our default recommendation for new builds. For Savant homes, Savant IP Audio. For Control4 homes, Triad. If you want lifestyle audio without a full control system, Sonos Amp is the leading choice. For dealer-grade matrix audio in a control-system-agnostic install, Autonomic Mirage is the professional standard. Restrepo Innovations will give you a straight recommendation on a free 30-minute call.
Sonos is simpler and ideal for homeowners who want polished app-first audio without the complexity of a full control system integration. Autonomic Mirage is the professional-grade choice for serious whole-home builds requiring 16 or more zones, dealer-grade quality, and deep integration with any major control platform (Crestron, Savant, Control4, etc.). For luxury estates above 8 zones, Autonomic consistently outperforms Sonos on scalability, audio quality, and integrator flexibility. Sonos wins on simplicity; Autonomic wins on depth.
Yes. Crestron’s current audio platform is Crestron DM NAX (Digital Media Network Audio Exchange), an Audio-over-IP system based on the AES67 standard. The flagship amplifier is the DM-NAX-8ZSA, which delivers 8 amplified stereo zones at 150 watts per channel, built-in streaming (AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, and more), and scales to 256 output zones across 32 DM NAX devices. The older Sonnex SWAMP platform has been discontinued and is no longer actively sold. DM NAX is the current Crestron audio platform for both residential and commercial deployments. Yes. Crestron offers a two-way Sonos driver that allows full control of Sonos zones from a Crestron touch screen, keypad, or app. Volume, source selection, transport controls, and metadata display all pass through the Crestron interface. However, for new Crestron whole-home builds, we recommend Crestron DM NAX as the native audio platform. it commissions in the same toolchain as the rest of the Crestron system, requires no third-party driver, and gives the integrator tighter control over DSP, zone management, and system health monitoring. Sonos integration via Crestron works well for clients who already own Sonos equipment and want to bring it under a Crestron control layer.
Triad is the first-party audio brand owned by Snap One, the same parent company as Control4. Triad products. including the current Triad SA1 streaming amplifier and Triad AMS-24 audio matrix switch. are natively integrated into Control4 OS, which means simpler commissioning, tighter feedback, and better long-term support compared to third-party audio brands in a Control4 system. Triad also produces a full line of in-wall, in-ceiling, and outdoor speakers. For Control4 homes, Triad is the preferred first-party audio platform; for non-Control4 systems, Autonomic or Crestron DM NAX are stronger choices.
A zone is any independently controllable listening area. Common zone counts: a 4,000 sq ft home typically needs 8–12 zones (kitchen, family room, master bedroom, master bath, guest rooms, office, patio x2, garage). A 10,000 sq ft estate often requires 20–32 zones. Pool house, guest cottage, and tennis pavilion each add zones. Zone count is the primary driver of system cost. Sonos Amp handles single zones added incrementally; Autonomic MMS-5A scales to 96 zones; Crestron DM NAX scales to 256 zones across 32 devices. Plan for at least 20% more zones than you think you need. outdoor entertaining spaces always expand.
Whole-home audio ranges from approximately $5,000 for a simple Sonos Amp install with 2–4 zones to $200,000 or more for a full Crestron DM NAX commercial-scale deployment with 30+ zones, architectural speakers, and DSP commissioning. Mid-range whole-home installs (8–16 zones, Autonomic or Triad, architectural speakers) typically run $15,000–$50,000 installed. Crestron DM NAX residential installs (10–20 zones, integrated with lighting and shading) typically run $40,000–$120,000 installed. All dealer-only systems require professional quotation. published ranges are approximations. Contact Restrepo Innovations for a site-specific estimate.
Sonos can be self-installed. All other systems on this comparison. Autonomic, Crestron DM NAX, Savant IP Audio, and Control4 Triad. are dealer-only platforms requiring a certified integrator for purchase, commissioning, and ongoing support. Dealer-only systems are not available through retail channels. Restrepo Innovations is a certified dealer for Crestron (Elite Pro level), Savant, Control4, and Autonomic (through Snap One). We serve NJ, NY, and CT luxury residences and commercial projects.
Crestron DM NAX (Digital Media Network Audio Exchange) is Crestron’s current Audio-over-IP platform, replacing the now-discontinued Sonnex SWAMP matrix audio system. Where Sonnex was a traditional hardware matrix switcher distributing audio over dedicated CAT5 cabling with a proprietary Sonnex Link protocol, DM NAX puts audio on the IP network using the open AES67 standard. This means audio travels over the same Ethernet infrastructure used for everything else in the building. no dedicated audio wiring runs required. DM NAX scales dramatically farther than Sonnex ever could: a single Crestron Home OS processor supports 32 DM NAX devices and up to 256 audio output zones. DM NAX also has per-zone built-in streaming (AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, and more), whereas Sonnex required a separate streaming source device at each zone. The Sonnex SWAMP-24X8 is confirmed discontinued at crestron.com. If you have an existing Sonnex system, contact Restrepo Innovations. we design DM NAX migration paths for existing Crestron homes.
