About This Course

Automated shading is not a convenience feature. it is a daylighting control system, and it performs best when the architect has treated it as such from early design. This course covers the relationship between glazing area, solar orientation, shading specification, and lighting control. addressing how each architectural decision constrains or enables what the shading system can achieve. The course is manufacturer-agnostic and covers the principles applicable to any automated roller, drapery, or exterior shading system.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, attendees will be able to:

  1. Analyze glazing area and solar orientation to identify shading zones that require motorized control for occupant comfort and energy performance.
  2. Specify rough-in requirements. pocket dimensions, header blocking, conduit, and power locations. for motorized roller shades, drapery systems, and exterior solar shades at the CD phase.
  3. Describe how automated shading integrates with lighting control systems to achieve scene-based daylighting management.
  4. Evaluate shading fabric openness factors and their effect on glare control, view preservation, and SHGC contribution.

Why This Matters

A motorized shade pocket that is undersized by 2 inches cannot receive the specified fabric, and the correction requires a structural header modification after framing is complete.
