We are asked this question several times a month. Lutron HomeWorks QSX or Crestron lighting, which do we recommend. The honest answer is that we install both platforms at the top tier and both are excellent. The question is never which one is better in the abstract. The question is what the rest of the home is doing, and which platform will integrate cleanly with it.
The Frame
Crestron is a complete home control platform. Lighting is one of many subsystems it can drive natively. alongside audio, video, climate, shades, security, and anything else with an open protocol. The Crestron lighting hardware is mature and broadly compatible. The advantage on a Crestron lighting deployment is single-ecosystem control, single-vendor support, and the option of fully custom programming logic that crosses lighting and the rest of the home.
Lutron is a lighting-and-shading company. That is the entire focus. Their flagship is HomeWorks QSX, which is the most refined residential lighting control platform in the market. The keypads, the dimmers, the scene engine, the integration with shades, the Ketra fixture line for tunable white and full color. all of it is best-in-class for a lighting-driven design.
When We Specify Crestron Lighting
On a project where Crestron is already controlling the rest of the home, we usually specify Crestron lighting. The reason is integration depth. The same processor that runs the entertainment, climate, and shade scenes runs the lighting natively, with no driver layer, no third-party gateway, and no licensing cost beyond the standard Crestron stack. The programmer has full bidirectional control of every load and every keypad button without going through an intermediary protocol.
The same logic applies on commercial projects, government installations, and large hospitality work, where the case for a single platform is even stronger.

When We Specify Lutron
On a project where lighting is the architectural feature. a gallery, a high-end art collector’s residence, a Ketra-driven primary suite, a design where the lighting designer is the lead consultant. Lutron HomeWorks QSX is often the right call. The Ketra fixture line in particular has no real equivalent in the market. Tunable white is one thing. Tunable white plus full color plus circadian shifting plus film-set color accuracy is Ketra, and Ketra is Lutron-native.
We integrate the Lutron system with Crestron over IP. The two platforms talk well. The homeowner gets a single Crestron interface that drives Lutron scenes underneath. Done correctly, the homeowner never knows there are two manufacturers involved.
What About the Wireless Question
Lutron Clear Connect RF is the most reliable proprietary wireless lighting protocol we have ever deployed. Crestron infiNET EX is also strong and has improved meaningfully in recent generations. On a retrofit project with limited ability to pull new wire, either platform will deliver a clean result. On a new build, wired loads to the panels remain the gold standard for both manufacturers, with wireless keypads where they make sense.
What We Will Not Do
We will not mix the two manufacturers within the same lighting system. You pick a platform and you commit to it. Hybrid lighting installations where half the loads are Lutron and half are Crestron are a service nightmare. Every change request involves two manufacturers and two programmers. We have rebuilt enough of those to know better.
The Right Conversation
The platform choice is made during the design development phase. By the time the electrician is rough-wiring, the decision should be locked.
