Quick Answer: Crestron is the standard for true luxury whole-home work in 2026, especially at the high end with serious lighting and long service horizons. Savant wins at the boutique luxury tier on daily usability. Control4 wins on value and time-to-luxury for contained scope. The platform is less important than the integrator behind it. We design, deploy, install, configure, and support all three across NJ, NY, and CT.
For a luxury home in New Jersey, Crestron, Savant, and Control4 are all real platforms with real install bases. The honest answer is that the integrator behind the platform matters more than the badge on the touchscreen, but the platforms are not interchangeable. Each one wins on a specific kind of project. This piece is how we choose for clients.
We are an Elite Pro Crestron Dealer. We design, deploy, install, configure, and support Crestron, Savant, and Control4. We have installed all three. The framing below is what we have seen across residential projects in Bergen, Essex, Morris, Passaic, and Hudson counties in New Jersey, in Fairfield and Litchfield counties in Connecticut, and across Westchester, Manhattan, and the Hamptons.
The short answer for a luxury NJ home
Crestron is the standard for a true luxury whole-home system in 2026, especially at the high end and on properties that include serious lighting, multiple buildings, or commercial-grade infrastructure.
Savant is the strongest competitor at the boutique luxury tier where Apple-style daily usability is the priority and the lighting and shading load is moderate.
Control4 is the strongest mid-tier platform and earns a place on luxury homes when the scope is more contained, the budget is tighter, or the client is upgrading from no system at all and wants a known interface fast.
These are not absolute rankings. They are how we triage a project after walking the house.
Where each platform actually wins
Crestron
Crestron wins on scale, depth, and the longest service horizon.
The hardware is built for commercial-grade reliability and the same processors run in conference rooms, military training facilities, and luxury homes. That matters because the engineering pedigree is real. The platform is the standard for a reason.
Crestron Home OS, the managed operating system layer, has materially closed the gap with boutique competitors on daily usability. Five years ago Crestron Home was the right answer for the integrator and the wrong answer for the homeowner. In 2026 it is both.
Crestron wins clearly when the project includes a serious Lutron HomeWorks QSX lighting program, multiple buildings on one network, a dedicated theater with deep audio and video processing, or a long-term service relationship that needs to survive integrator changes. The depth of the programming language, the size of the dealer and programmer ecosystem, and the longevity of the platform are what carry the weight on those projects.
Savant
Savant wins on user experience at the boutique luxury tier.
The interface is Apple-clean. The remote is a standout. The mobile app feels modern. For homeowners who prioritize daily usability over deep customization, Savant lands cleanly.
Savant has invested heavily in lighting through the GE Lighting acquisition, and the platform now carries a credible lighting story it did not have a decade ago. The integration of audio, video, climate, and lighting in one ecosystem is genuinely tight.
Savant works well on mid-luxury homes in the three thousand to seven thousand square foot range, with eight to fifteen lighting scenes, a media room or a moderate theater, and a client who values how the system feels in the hand more than the depth of what is possible.
Savant is less of a fit when the lighting program crosses into estate-level fixture counts, when commercial-grade networking is required, or when the property includes multiple buildings or a guest house on the same operating system.
Control4
Control4 wins on value and on time-to-luxury for clients who do not yet have a control system at all.
The platform is mature, the dealer network is large, and the interface is competent. Control4 systems install faster than Crestron systems of similar scope, because the standardized programming model trades some depth for speed.
Control4 works well on luxury entry tier homes where the scope is contained. Lighting, audio, climate, security, a media room, and a clean app. The budget arrives quickly at a working system.
Control4 starts to feel its limits when the project pushes into full estate scope, when the lighting fixture count crosses a few hundred, when the network and AV programming start asking for the kind of custom logic that Crestron handles natively, or when the client is going to live in the house for twenty years and needs a service horizon that matches.
Where each platform does not win
Crestron is the wrong answer when the budget and the scope do not justify the platform. A 2,500 square foot home with light scenes and three audio zones does not need Crestron. The cost of the programming alone would over-build the room.
Savant is the wrong answer at the very high end. Reference-grade theaters, estate-level lighting, multi-building campuses, and commercial-grade integration are not where Savant has the deepest engineering bench. The platform can do the work, but the depth is not the same as Crestron.
Control4 is the wrong answer when the client wants the longest service relationship. The platform is solid. The integrator network is deep. The horizon of customization, however, is shorter than Crestron's. A Control4 system that needs to grow significantly in year five usually wants to be a Crestron system by year ten.
What actually drives the choice
Five factors move the decision more than the platform name.
The lighting program. The size of the lighting design is the single largest signal. A 200 fixture, 30 keypad Lutron HomeWorks design with Ketra accent fixtures is a Crestron job. A 60 fixture, 10 keypad design with mid-tier dimmers can sit on Savant or Control4 cleanly.
The integrator's depth on the platform. A great Crestron shop can deliver a Crestron home that an average Crestron shop cannot. The same is true for Savant and Control4. The platform is upper-bounded by the team programming it. Choose the integrator first.
The service relationship. The client's tolerance for change matters. A homeowner who is in the house for thirty years and wants the same firm carrying the system the entire time should choose a platform with a long service horizon. That is usually Crestron.
The infrastructure footprint. Networking, theater scope, multiple buildings, outdoor entertainment, security integration. The deeper the infrastructure, the stronger the case for Crestron.
The interface preferences of the family. If the family lives on iPhones and values the Apple feel, Savant earns a serious look. If the family wants the simplest possible experience with the largest dealer network, Control4 earns a serious look. If the family wants the deepest customization and the longest horizon, Crestron earns it.
How we choose for clients in NJ
We listen to the customer and we get what they want, not what we think we can sell them. The right platform is the one that fits how the family lives in the house and how the project is scoped.
A 5,000 square foot home in Franklin Lakes with a serious lighting program, a dedicated theater, and a working couple who travels and needs remote access lands on Crestron almost every time.
A 4,500 square foot home in Saddle River with moderate lighting, two media rooms, and a family that lives on iPhones and wants the system to feel like an Apple product lands on Savant cleanly.
A 3,500 square foot home in Tenafly that is being upgraded from no system at all, where the budget is contained and the client wants a luxury feel without estate scope, lands on Control4.
The honest answer lives in the walk of the house, not in a comparison chart.
Cost framing
A Crestron whole-home system in NJ typically runs forty thousand to two hundred fifty thousand dollars installed at the residential tier, with reference-grade estates running well past that. We covered the full range in the Whole-Home Crestron Automation Cost in New Jersey article.
A Savant system at similar scope typically lands twenty to thirty percent below the equivalent Crestron build, because the standardized hardware and the lighter programming layer trade some depth for cost.
A Control4 system at similar scope typically lands thirty to forty percent below the equivalent Crestron build, for the same reasons further amplified.
The number is not the story. The number is the consequence of the scope. A Crestron home that is overbuilt costs more than a Savant home that is right-sized. A Savant home that is underbuilt costs more than a Control4 home that is right-sized. The platform choice does not save money. The scope choice does.
What is not in the platform comparison
Three things matter more than the platform and do not show up in a side-by-side chart.
Programming quality. A Crestron Home OS install with default scenes from a shop that did not write the family's morning routine, dinner scene, party mode, theater mode, and away mode is a Crestron system that does not feel like a Crestron system. A Savant install programmed by a team that knows the platform deeply will outperform a Crestron install programmed by a team that does not.
Network architecture. Every one of these platforms depends on the network. A UISP fiber backbone, UniFi PoE switching, proper RF planning, and a router that can carry the load are not optional on any of these platforms. A bad network kills a great control system.
Service model. The integrator's commitment to the system on year five, year ten, year fifteen is what determines whether the platform was the right choice. The platform is the box. The service is what makes the house work.
What Restrepo Innovations does on these projects
Restrepo Innovations runs four divisions. Residential is one of them. The other three are commercial, hospitality, and military/government. The same operating discipline that runs a hospitality project at scale shows up on a residential project in Franklin Lakes.

Frequently asked questions
Is Crestron really better than Savant or Control4?
For a true luxury home with long-term support requirements, Crestron is the standard for a reason. Savant is a strong boutique luxury platform with the cleanest user experience in the category. Control4 is a strong mid-tier platform with a large dealer network and competent interface. All three can be installed well or installed poorly. The platform is less important than the integrator behind it. The honest test is the service relationship, not the box.
Which platform has the best mobile app?
Savant has the cleanest mobile app of the three. The interface, the gestures, and the responsiveness feel modern in a way that the others have not fully matched. Crestron Home has closed the gap significantly with the 2024 and 2025 platform updates and is now competitive on daily usability. Control4 has a competent app that does what it needs to do. If the mobile app is the deciding factor, Savant earns a serious look.
Can I switch from Control4 or Savant to Crestron later?
Yes, with limits. Lighting hardware on Lutron survives any control system change because Lutron speaks to all three platforms. Crestron-controlled audio and video racks can be repurposed on a platform change. Keypads, touchscreens, and the programming layer have to be replaced. Plan thirty to fifty percent of the original system cost for a platform migration, depending on what carries over.
What is the longest-supported platform of the three?
Crestron has the longest service horizon. The platform has been in the field for forty years and the company supports legacy installs through current programming tools. Savant supports its installs through clear product life cycles and a known upgrade path. Control4 has a strong dealer network for service but a shorter horizon than Crestron on deep customization.
Which platform does Restrepo recommend most often?
For luxury whole-home work in NJ, NY, and CT, we recommend Crestron most often. We recommend Savant when the family prioritizes daily usability and the scope is moderate. We recommend Control4 when the scope is contained and the budget is tighter. We listen to the customer first. The platform comes second.
