TL;DR: Crestron wins on programming flexibility, depth of integration, scalability over 10–15 years, and is the de facto standard for true luxury construction. Control4 wins at lower price points, faster installs, and homes under roughly 6,000 square feet where you want polished basics and a lower total project cost. We install Crestron exclusively, but we will tell you honestly which one fits your project. and refer you out if it is Control4.

The Scenario

You are mid-construction on a luxury new build. The framing is up, the rough-in wiring crew is scheduled for next week, and your general contractor just asked you to make a decision: Crestron or Control4. The architect has heard both names. Your interior designer works with a Control4 dealer she likes. A friend in Greenwich swears by his Crestron setup. You have about a week to decide, and the answer will define how your home feels and functions for the next fifteen years.

This is the most consequential technology decision in a new build, and it gets made at rough-in. when the walls are open and the cost of changing your mind later is as low as it will ever be. Once the drywall goes up and the tile goes down, a platform change becomes a full replacement project, not a software update.

Here is what I tell clients in NJ, NY, and CT when they are in that exact moment.

What Both Platforms Actually Are

Crestron and Control4 are both whole-home automation platforms. They sit at the center of your home’s technology stack and orchestrate everything: lighting, shading, climate, audio, video, security, networking, and any other system that needs to communicate. You control it all through touchpanels, mobile apps, or voice. Both have been doing this for a long time. Both have real installations in serious homes. Neither is a gimmick.

The difference is not in what they control. it is in how deeply they can be configured, how they age, and what kind of dealer talent they attract.

Programming Flexibility

This is the clearest differentiator, and the one that matters most in a custom luxury build.

Crestron is a programmable platform. A skilled Crestron programmer writes actual code. SIMPL+, SIMPL Sharp, or Crestron Home OS. to define every behavior, every trigger, every edge case. If you want the pool equipment to run only during off-peak utility hours, the outdoor audio to follow a specific time schedule by zone, the wine cellar to alert the caretaker if temperature drifts more than three degrees overnight, or the guest suite to revert to factory defaults when a guest key card is removed. all of that is code. It can be written, tested, and delivered exactly as specified.

Control4 is largely a configuration platform. Dealers work in a visual programming environment called Composer HE. For the vast majority of residential use cases. lights, shades, music, climate, video distribution. it covers the ground well. But one-off behaviors, deep custom logic, and the kind of system-wide conditional programming that a truly automated luxury home requires either push against the edges of what Composer supports or require a third-party driver and a workaround.

For a custom house with specific requirements, this distinction is not academic. It is the difference between a system that does exactly what you designed and a system that does approximately what a template allows. If your home has unusual requirements. an integrated AV theater, a complex multi-zone Lutron setup, a commercial-grade HVAC system, a generator with automatic transfer logic. Crestron’s programmability earns its cost premium.

Dealer Ecosystem and Technical Talent

Both Crestron and Control4 operate through authorized dealer networks. The quality of that dealer network is not uniform on either side.

Crestron has a tiered dealer program. Elite Pro is the highest level, and it requires demonstrating a real track record of complex installations, programmer credentialing, and ongoing technical training. There are far fewer Elite Pro dealers than there are Crestron dealers in general, and the technical bar is genuinely high. When you hire an Elite Pro shop, you are getting a programmer. someone who has written serious control code. not just an installer who swaps out hardware and loads a template.

Control4 has a larger and more accessible dealer network, which is part of its business model. There are excellent Control4 dealers. There are also a lot of dealers who got certified to sell the ecosystem and whose actual programming depth is thin. The variance in quality is wider than it is in the Crestron Elite Pro tier. If you find a genuinely strong Control4 dealer with a real programmer on staff and a portfolio of serious installs, that relationship is worth a lot. If you are hiring from a pool of regional generalists, the odds of landing a high-skill programmer are lower.

This is also why dealer vetting matters as much as platform selection. A great dealer on a good platform beats a mediocre dealer on a great platform, every time.

Hardware Quality and Longevity

Crestron has been building commercial and residential control hardware for over 50 years. Their processors run in stadiums, hotels, hospitals, and government buildings. That commercial lineage shows up in build quality and software support. A Crestron processor installed in a luxury home today should be fully functional 10 to 15 years from now. We have clients running Crestron systems that are 12 years old and still performing at spec with a firmware update and a few hardware refreshes on the peripheral devices.

Control4 makes solid residential hardware. The concern. and it is a legitimate one to raise. is corporate continuity. Control4 was acquired by Snap One in 2019, and Snap One has since gone through its own acquisition by Resideo in 2024. Platform continuity, long-term software support, and the depth of the driver ecosystem are questions worth asking when a platform has changed hands twice in five years. That is not a reason to disqualify Control4. Snap One has continued investing in the platform. but it is context worth having if you are committing to a system you expect to live with for 15 years.

Crestron is still independent, still founder-influenced in its engineering culture, and still maintains backward compatibility with older systems in ways that matter when you need to expand or update rather than replace.

Cost Reality

Crestron hardware costs more. At the rack level. processors, touchpanels, control modules. a Crestron system for a comparable home typically runs 30 to 50 percent more than Control4 hardware. On a 5,000 square foot home, that might translate to $15,000–$30,000 in additional hardware cost at the rack.

But hardware is not the dominant cost in a well-specified luxury automation project. Labor is. Wiring is. The AV gear. amplifiers, speakers, projectors, screens, video distribution matrices. is. When you look at total installed project cost, a Crestron project and a Control4 project in the same 8,000 square foot home are often within 15 to 20 percent of each other. The platform delta is real; it is just smaller than the hardware line items suggest.

Where Control4’s cost advantage is most meaningful is at the lower end of the luxury tier. homes in the 4,000 to 6,000 square foot range where you want quality basics and the programming requirements are not particularly complex. In that context, the Crestron premium does not buy you a proportionate amount of additional capability. Control4 delivers excellent value there.

When Control4 Is the Right Answer

We say this as an Elite Pro Crestron dealer: there are projects where Control4 is the honest recommendation.

  • Homes under 5,000 square feet where the automation requirements are straightforward. lighting scenes, multi-room audio, climate, TV control. and the programming complexity is low. Control4 handles this tier extremely well at a more accessible price point.
  • Cost-sensitive luxury clients who want quality automation but have a firm budget ceiling. If the choice is a well-installed Control4 system versus an underfunded Crestron installation where corners get cut, the well-installed Control4 system wins.
  • Existing Control4 dealer relationships. If you already work with a Control4 dealer whose work you trust and whose programmer is genuinely skilled, that relationship has value. Switching platforms to work with an unfamiliar dealer is not automatically the right move.
  • Phased projects where the initial installation is intentionally modest and the owner expects to expand later, but is not sure in which direction. Control4’s lower entry cost and its Snap One ecosystem give reasonable upgrade paths.

If Control4 is the right fit for your project and you would like a referral to a dealer we consider credible, ask us. We would rather place you well than force a fit that does not serve you.

When Crestron Is the Right Answer

Most of our clients fall into this category, which is why we are an Elite Pro Crestron shop and not a multi-line generalist.

  • 8,000 square feet and up, multiple zones, complex programming. The larger the home and the more nuanced the behavioral requirements, the more Crestron’s programmability pays back. A home with 20 audio zones, a 4K theater, a motorized skylight, a pool house, and a wine cellar that communicates with the HVAC system is a Crestron project.
  • Deep Lutron integration. Lutron HomeWorks QS and Ketra tunable white and color lighting are the gold standards in luxury residential lighting. Both integrate natively and deeply with Crestron. The programming handshake between Crestron and a full Lutron HomeWorks installation is as tight as it gets. If lighting design is a serious part of your project. and in a luxury new build it should be. Crestron is the right control backbone. See our lighting design services for how we approach this.
  • Systems built to grow over 15+ years. Crestron’s backward compatibility and programming architecture make it realistic to add, modify, and expand a system over a decade and a half without a full replacement. The infrastructure you install at rough-in is not a sunk cost. it is a foundation.
  • You want a programmer on the project, not just an installer. This is the clearest signal. If you have specific behavioral requirements, custom scenes, integration with non-standard devices, or you simply want the system to work exactly as you designed it rather than approximately as a template permits. hire a Crestron programmer. That level of craft exists in the Elite Pro tier in a way it does not in either platform’s general dealer pool.
  • Hospitality and commercial adjacency. If the property has commercial-grade requirements. a home office suite, a guest wing with hotel-like functions, a meeting room, a private club or event space on the grounds. Crestron’s commercial track record is directly relevant. It is the platform deployed in Four Seasons properties, corporate boardrooms, and major venues because it performs reliably at scale under demanding conditions.

What About Savant, Josh.ai, Apple Home, and the Others?

A few words on the alternatives that come up in luxury home conversations.

Savant is a legitimate luxury platform with a strong UX and an Apple-friendly ecosystem. It plays well in high-end residential contexts, especially for clients who want an exceptionally polished app experience and are not pushing the edges of custom programming. It does not have Crestron’s depth in commercial-grade programming or Crestron’s dealer programming talent pool, but it is a serious option for the right project.

Josh.ai started as a voice-first overlay on top of Crestron, Control4, or Savant and has lately evolved into more of a control layer in its own right. We have used it in Crestron integrations where a client specifically asked for it, but our recommendation has cooled. The honest read: under the hood, Josh.ai is functionally a polished wrapper around the same kinds of capabilities open-source platforms like Home Assistant deliver. with ongoing licensing fees and a much larger bill. Voice processing is cloud-dependent, so when the home internet is down, voice control is down with it. The platform retains a recording history of voice interactions and an audio log of what its microphones pick up. Recent integrations with third-party LLMs such as ChatGPT-class models add convenience but extend the data path to additional vendors. Performance in clear American English is strong; heavier accents and non-English languages remain a real-world challenge. And from an integrator’s standpoint, Josh.ai support is email-only with no published phone line. which is a meaningful constraint when designing around high-profile residences where a same-day human escalation matters. We still install it when a client requests it, but we no longer position it as the default voice answer for a new luxury build.

Apple HomeKit / Google Home / Amazon Alexa are consumer ecosystems. They are not in the same category as Crestron or Control4 for a new luxury build. They are useful as voice endpoints bolted onto a professional system, not as the control backbone for a serious home.

For a luxury new build, the relevant decision is Crestron versus Control4, with Savant as a third option worth a conversation in the right context.

For reference on how we handle multi-zone video and signal distribution. one of the areas where platform choice has the most visible impact. see our post on distributed video.

The Decision Framework

Here is how to think through it if you are staring at the question right now.

Start with square footage and programming complexity. Under 5,000 square feet with straightforward requirements: Control4 is worth a serious look. Over 8,000 square feet with complex zones, significant lighting design, and custom behavior requirements: Crestron, and specifically an Elite Pro dealer with a programmer on staff.

Then look at your lighting strategy. If you are doing a full Lutron HomeWorks or Ketra installation. and in a true luxury new build you probably should be. Crestron’s native integration is a real advantage. The programming is tighter, the scenes are more flexible, and the long-term expandability is better. If you are still deciding between HomeWorks and the lighter RadioRA 3 line, see our breakdown on Lutron HomeWorks vs RadioRA 3 for where each one fits and what the cost gap actually looks like.

Then evaluate the dealer, not just the platform. Ask to see their portfolio. Ask who programs. Ask how many Elite Pro or equivalent credentials they hold. Ask for a reference on a similar-scale project. The dealer makes the system; the platform just sets the ceiling for how good it can be.

Finally, make the decision at rough-in. Not after the tile is in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Crestron better than Control4?

For large luxury homes. typically 8,000 square feet and up, multi-zone audio/video, deep lighting integration, and systems expected to grow over 10–15 years. Crestron is the stronger platform. It offers true open programming, deeper third-party integrations, a 30+ year commercial track record, and processors built to run reliably for a decade or more. For smaller homes where the priority is polished basics at a lower cost, Control4 is often the better answer. The honest take: neither platform is universally better. The right answer depends on the size of the home, the complexity of the programming requirements, and the quality of the dealer.

How much does Crestron cost compared to Control4?

At the rack level, Crestron hardware typically runs 30–50% more than equivalent Control4 hardware for a comparable home. However, hardware is not the dominant cost in a luxury automation project. Labor, wiring, AV equipment, and integration time make up the majority of the total project budget, and those costs are similar across both platforms. A well-specified Crestron project and a well-specified Control4 project in the same 8,000 square foot home might end up within 15–20% of each other in total installed cost.

Can I switch from Control4 to Crestron later?

Yes, but it is a full replacement project, not an upgrade. The processors, touchpanels, and Control4-specific devices all come out and are replaced with Crestron hardware. Wiring. Cat6, speaker wire, conduit. is generally reusable. Third-party devices get re-integrated on the new platform. Budget for a full control system replacement if you make this switch after the home is finished. The smarter move is to make the right call at rough-in, when the walls are open and the cost difference is mostly just hardware.

Which is easier to use day-to-day. Crestron or Control4?

Both offer polished touchpanel interfaces and mobile apps that clients use comfortably day to day. Crestron Home OS, the newer residential platform, is genuinely easy to use and has closed the gap with Control4’s historically stronger out-of-the-box UI. The bigger variable is how well the system was designed and programmed. A Crestron system with a thoughtful interface designer and an experienced programmer feels more intuitive than a Control4 system assembled from a template. Day-to-day usability is at least as much about the dealer’s craft as the platform.

Does Restrepo Innovations install both Crestron and Control4?

We install Crestron exclusively. We are an Elite Pro Crestron dealer. the top tier Crestron recognizes for technical proficiency, programming depth, and project volume. That said, we will tell you honestly when Control4 is a better fit for your project. If you have a smaller home, a tighter budget, or an existing relationship with a strong Control4 dealer, we will say so. If Control4 is the right call and you would like a referral to a dealer we trust, we will provide one. We have no interest in installing the wrong platform just to get the job.

“The question is not which platform is better. The question is which platform is right for this house, with this program, with this dealer. Those are three different variables. Get all three right and the system earns its cost. Get one wrong and you spend the next decade wishing you had taken more time at rough-in.” __EMDASH_PROTECT_0__
